5.0 out of 5 stars Margaret Fox is back with a great new cook book
I am so pleased with Margaret Fox's new edition of her Morning Food book. I have used that book over many years and it is the source of my favorite dessert, Buttermilk Cinnamon Coffee Cake, a guaranteed hit with company. 2.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing special
This book was okay, but nothing outstanding or special. Same old recipes, no knew twists or things to cook up. On my list of rating from 1 to 5 Stars, with 5 the tops, I give this one about a 2 Star.

Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Cookbook of the Year Makes Holiday Gift Giving Easy & Breakfast Delicious, October 18, 2006
This review is from: Morning Food: Breakfasts, Brunches and More for Savoring the Best Part of the Day (Paperback)
I love this book! I found the recipes fantastic, easy to use, inspirational and requiring a variety of widely available ingredients in combinations that result in incredible and delicious dishes. I was motivated to use the recipes, and felt completely competent doing so! I am eternally grateful that Fox's definition of morning food includes black bean chili, blintzes, quesadillas and coffee cake! I'm not a morning person, but I love Morning Food. Fox's directions are easy to follow and her comments very funny. What a find! It will be a staple of my holiday gift giving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakfast a la Margaret Fox's way is now my favorite meal!, January 4, 2007

Margaret's very personal cookbook is a joy to read, not just to cook from. For a newly-minted breakfast lover (diabetes convinced me of the need for... and joys of breakfast) finding all these unique recipes has expanded my ideas of what breakfast can be. So far I've fallen in love with the Sunday pancake, Sausage stuffed baked apples, and Passed-its-prime fruit. And I've only had this cookbook since Christmas! Margaret, I'm in love with your stories, your wit, and the absolutely wonderful foods you've brought into my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best recipe books I own!, June 5, 2007

This review is from: Morning Food: Breakfasts, Brunches and More for Savoring the Best Part of the Day (Paperback)
This book is wonderful! My husband and I love breakfast, and just when I was starting to get bored with fixing the regulars (bacon, eggs, pancakes, etc.) I found this book. Every recipe I've made so far has tasted wonderful! I love the little stories that go with each recipe, knowing the background of what you're cooking makes it more interesting and is fun to tell your guests while you're serving them. I just impressed my friends with the homemade Cinnamon Rolls and the Stinson Beach Blueberry Muffins. I highly recommend this book, whether you're planning on entertaining or just enjoy cooking for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mendocino's Best Breakfast, January 15, 2007

This is a wonderful, yet surprisingly simple, breakfast cookbook. One would not want to peruse a lengthy tome at 8:00AM anyway, so this one fits the bill. I tried several recipes during the recent holidays and was pleased with all of them. Ms. Fox also reveals a subtle sense of humor within her instructions, making it a little more fun to cook for company while trying to wake up enough to read them correctly. I recommend this cookbook for all levels of expertise or lack thereof, as it is reliable and well-written. Ms. Fox braved a tourist destination restaurant for many years and still has something to give - amazing !

5.0 out of 5 stars Get ready to see breakfast in a new light, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Morning Food: Breakfasts, Brunches and More for Savoring the Best Part of the Day (Paperback)
You may think you know what's inside this book simply because it's about "breakfast food," but trust me, you don't. While "Morning Food," by Margaret Fox, does indeed contain many scrumptious recipes for traditional breakfast favorites - waffles, pancakes, muffins - each dish has been crafted into something especially unique and inviting. Hence you find yourself with delicious, easy-to-follow recipes for "Mocha Walnut Wonder Muffins," "Pumpkin & Ginger Pancakes" and "Cindy's Cherry Chocolate-Chip Scones," all delightful twists on old time faves. However, more than this, "Morning Food" suggests dishes that one may not usually associate with early, or even mid, morning meals. I certainly wouldn't have thought to serve "bun bun noodles with spicy peanut sauce" for the first meal of the day, but after taking a chance and following Fox's suggestion I now have a new take on the whole business of morning eating.

"Morning Food" is a beautifully presented, well-bound book with a generous number of photographs and helpful kitchen tips. Fox introduces you to the finer aspects of bread baking and discusses the history of schnapps (brandy distilled from fermented fruits) in approachable, friendly language. Her relaxed, comfortable style teaches you not to worry about mistakes and how to develop a repertoire of favorite dishes. Did those first few crepes not come out as hoped? No problem, freeze them then use the crepes later, cut into strips, as a garnish for soup. In every respect, Fox makes you feel like she's an old friend who has invited you into her kitchen, where she happily shares her hard-won kitchen wisdom.

Chapters include: Cereals & Fruit; Muffins, Cookies & Biscuits; Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast & Crepes; Sandwiches & Soups; Side Dishes & Salads; Spreads, Sauces & Dressings; Entrees; Desserts; and Drinks. My favorite sections include the chapter about Bread & Scones and the Coffee Cakes chapter. Here I found delightful recipes for cinnamon-rolls, cinnamon-raisin bread, poppy seed yeast bread, yogurt coffee cake and chocolate-filled coffee cake. While these recipes may sound familiar, my husband is still raving about them, as are our friends. The yogurt coffee cake was a particular favorite, with people marveling at the subtle flavor and perfect texture - moist, yet firm, with a little give, like the best muffin you've ever had except in cake form. I recommend this book without reservation: if you are breakfast lover, if you enjoy great food, add this one to your collection.

* Note: For the curious, three recipes from this book can be seen on my site. :)

is to pick a recipe from Margaret Fox's great new cookbook, "Morning Foods" and start cooking. She makes cooking uncomplicated and fun. Her stories add a history to every recipe. Most importantly her cookbooks give me the confidence to try new ingredients, new techniques and best of all everything turns out tasting great! I recommend it, as well as all her other books, for every cook at every level.

As a former patron of Cafe Beaujolais under Margaret Fox and an owner of the original book, I hoped the revised editon would be as good. It's even better with updated recipes, new ones, some lovely photos, and Margaret's same delightful sense of humor. Best of all the recipes are appropriate for all levels of cooking expertise and they really work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very delicious treat!, April 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Morning Food: Breakfasts, Brunches and More for Savoring the Best Part of the Day (Paperback)
Having purchased before two other books by Margaret Fox (and considering them great books, by the way), I was not disapointed by this one, rather pleasantly surprised! The previous books were good, and I made almost all the recipes in both Cafe Beaujolais and Evening Food Cafe Beaujolais, but this one... oh this one! mmmm!

almost ALL recipes are great! delicious, deceptively simple and astonishing! you can tell Margaret has Cooked, and done it well! Almost every recipe has an introduction, so the book reads like a chat with a friend who is sharing a favourite recipe.

If you want morning food, treat yourself to this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Morning Food: Breakfasts, Brunches and More for Savoring the Best Part of the Day (Paperback)
I like a lot of the recipes in this book, but at least half I will probably never make, but all seem to be easy enough for the everyday time restricted cook. A few nice photos add a personal touch the the cookbook.
