Editorial Reviews

"This is a book that breathes into you over time and rereading.... I hope readers appreciate how significant he is. Ellenbogen is, for me, one of the most human and humane poets I have ever read." --John Kinsella

"With Morning Gothic George Ellenbogen takes his rightful place in the forefront of living poets. He writes with a passionate compassion for others, a determination to get clearly across to us what he sees and feels. For anyone who cares for poetry, this book is essential." --X.J. Kennedy

Format: Paperback
'..that night/the lamps looked like they'd go on forever.' Like these poems. On the back cover XJ Kennedy places the author among the forefront of living poets. How many poets in their prime does XJ find time for? Would he put GE in the top ten? The top hundred? The top thousand? And are we talking world poets here? Ellenbogen, in case you wondered, is Canadian. He may well be among the thousand best Canadian poets alive, of whom I know of a couple myself, Karen Solie and Michael Lista (though Solie may already have peaked) - and believe me, I'm still looking -- but the 'forefront' of anything? They're just good at what they do. John Kinsella's introduction is preposterous; how he can give Paul Celan an acute accent - twice - defeats me. Seigniorial (p95) is presumably the little-bit-Latino stateside take on seigneurial. Ouch. And I fear the faux-Latin of conundrum cannot be declined - though there's a delectable Notes and Queries strand on the topic, with Rocky Kurchak of Akron stoutly defending our right to say conundra - or anything we damn well please. And you can check out gems like "Who ordered the breakfastses?" Worth a look..
