Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2?Here is a sort of Child's Garden of Verses for the late 20th century. Starting with waking, continuing through the school day, and concluding with bath and bedtime, 29 poems are arranged chronologically to suit young children's daily activities. The verses are penned by various writers, both well known and less so; Taberski's students helped with the selection process. All of the poems are easy to read?there are no obscure, high-flown messages to challenge or confound readers. There is nothing particularly poignant or wildly hilarious, either. The illustrations are clean-edged, cut-paper collages in bright colors on white backgrounds. They are attractive, almost sanitized. This pleasant book could open the way for more provocative experiences in understanding poetry and the sociology of school.?Ruth K. MacDonald, Bay Path College, Longmeadow, MA

From Booklist

Ages 2^-8. For preschool read-alouds and for the lapsit crowd, this is a delightful anthology of 29 poems by some of the best children's poets, including Valerie Worth, Myra Cohn Livingston, and Lilian Moore. From waking up to going to bed, the poems are arranged around the activities and feelings in the child's day. Doniger's brightly colored cut-paper collages express the nonsense, energy, and singing rhythms of the verses. The design leaves lots of space, and the pictures are clear and beautiful for group sharing, even more so in the big-book format. Whether it's Mary Ann Hoberman's puns ("Pick up Your Room" ), David Harrison's exuberance ("My Book!" ), or Dorothy Aldis' quiet observation ("Kick a Little Stone" ), poetry is fun in this book.
