Book Description

November 1, 2001 2 and up
A child's cheerful ode to the morning.

Good morning, eyes.
Good morning, nose.
Good morning, fingers.
There you are toes.

A little boy wakes up early one morning and begins to greet all the things in his bedroom, from his teddy bear to his clock. As the sun rises higher and higher, so does the boy's joy, culminating in an exuberant "Good morning, good morning!" As the door slowly opens, he runs into his father's loving arms.

Morning Song's lyrical, simple verse and luminous illustrations will make every child look forward to greeting the new day.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Siddals and Sayles (previously teamed for Millions of Snowflakes) again join forces for a winning evocation of a boy's awakening. In the beginning, Sayles casts the child in morning's dewy blue light. "Good morning, blankie./ Good morning, bear./ Good morning, bunny/ I see you there," he chants. As Siddals's rhythmic, gently rhyming salutatory roll call continues, the illustrations grow brighter: a toy crown glows golden; the boy's hair lightens to red as he shares a book with his baby doll. Finally, Daddy's at the door. "Good morning!" accompanies the final illustration of father and son in a fully lit, tender embrace. Ages 2-5.

From School Library Journal

reS-The joy of waking to a new day is captured by a small boy's ode as he greets each familiar object in his room with delight. The short, rhyming phrases-"Good morning, blankie./Good morning, bear./Good morning, bunny./I see you there"-are typical of a young child's perceptions. Luminous illustrations in pastels capture his exuberance, although somber shades of blue seem more reflective of nighttime than morning. A ray of sunshine as the curtains are pulled is the only hint that it is, indeed, early morning. Although slight, this picture book is emotionally on target for the very young.

5.0 out of 5 stars welcome book about the joy of dawn, January 23, 2002

This review is from: Morning Song (Hardcover)
There are many nighttime books for children, but this is the first I've seen for waking. It starts gently, it becomes exuberant. It is joyful. And as the little boy of the book wakes and proceeds to greet the objects within his room and without, the light steadily grows, casting a glow on hazy pastel illustrations. Good morning, pillow. Good morning book. Finally, daddy enters his room and the boy's most joyful 'Good Morning!' peals out as they hug.

There is a special joy in that time before everyone awakens, when one has the world to oneself. Perhaps this book will help you appreciate, or awaken, that little morning person.

One of my 20-month-old daughter's favorite books. I love it too. Simple but fun and sweet.
