5.0 out of 5 stars Shue captures the genisis of the Union victory, April 4, 2008
This review is from: Morning at Willoughby Run: The Opening Battles at Gettysburg (Hardcover)
I have always been curious how Lee could have found his army so deeply engaged in a place he never intended. Shues detailed account of the first hours of battle between General Heth, Buford and Reynolds forces near Willoughby Creek sheds wonderful light on the men who directed the action and outcome of the conflict.
Was this simply an errant forray by Heth to resupply the army with shoes as many historians have concluded? Or were there deeper forces a work that drew the combatants into an irreversible action at Gettysburg. Why was General Reynolds within a few paces of the enemy when he was killed? The author's sharpened focus on the first few hours of the lives of the major players at and about Herbts Woods fill in the missing links needed to answer my questions in a way no other book has captured. Thanks Mr Shue!
I recommend this account as very enjoyable reading for the serious reader of our country's Civil war history.
