5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Demented, and Thoughtful all at once--A Classic!
Five years ago, I saw the Rugburns in concert in San Diego, prompted by hearing local hit "Hitchhiker Joe" on the radio. They were incredible. "Morning Wood" is at once funny, demented, and touching, not at all coming off corny. Check out "I Want to Learn About Love," "Gold's Gym Guy", and the beautifully introspective...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hicksville meets Wierd Al and it ain't pleasant
This album is probably one of the most pathetic albums I've heard in a long time... Spoof country just isn't a style that should have been persued...

All in all, one of my favorite albums of the 90's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever, March 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Morning Wood (Audio CD)
Like I said above, this is THE BEST ALBUM EVER. Almost every song is great- for the liberal listener with a sense of humor. I love this album more than the guy that introduced me (which I think partially explains where our relationship went wrong- that, and that I think "Gold's Gym Guy" intimidated him). Anyway, absolutely fabulous music. It's mostly upbeat, and sends a good, wholesome message that the whole family can enjoy. No, wait... it's totally raunchy, but wonderful.

I was stationed in San Diego with the Navy while these guys were playing in the bars that I would visit. I bought this album in a bar during one of their shows when it was first released. I played the hell out of it during a 6 month deployment in late 94, and then somehow during my transfer to Hawaii in 95 I misplaced the CD.

I can't say how many times I've thought of the album in the 7 years since, and missed having it, and today, out of boredom I do a search here, and there it is! Amazing!

This band deserves to be around as much as Barenaked Ladies. The lyrics are cleverly amusing. It's a shame these guys never found themselves in the right place at the right time - they belong side-by-side with BNL, Cake, etc. Buy this CD - you won't regret it.

This is one of the best albums I have. I've listen to the Rugburns since their humble beginings. Each song is creatively humorous. Great feel good music anyone can enjoy.

Rob Driscoll is the raddest guy and so is his CD. How do I know this you might ask? He's my Honors English teacher for the 10th grade. So take my advice and buy that CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like good lyrics, you'll love the Rug Burns, June 25, 1999

Amazon has these San Diego boys listed as an Import. How does that happen? Steve & Rob keep you laughing while singing along. I have never heard so many songs with serious ballads yet such strange lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine line between genius and crazy, but who cares, October 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Morning Wood (Audio CD)
Six years ago I walked into Kelly's Pub in San Diego (a favorite hang out at that time). On a stage about the size of my bed were two guys playing their guitars and soliciting the crowd for beer. After watching these two guys for a few minutes I noticed that their lyrics were very clever, a mix of humor and street smarts. They called themselves the Rugburns. I kept coming back to watch them as the crowds kept getting larger and larger until they outgrew the place. I was really happy when they put out an album. I already knew the songs by heart. Their music is great but their style is eclectic so only get this album if you enjoy intelligent music, you have a sense of humor and you aren't in an iron lung. One small aside, their second album "Taking the World by Donkey" is even better.

Masterful, smooth and talented (probably not); the "Rugburn's" Morning Wood is a raw cutting-edge album comprised of humorous lyrics, offbeat sounds and obscure literary references. Two out of every three Houses of the Holy fans agree that this album is a must-have! Buy it and listen to "Me and Eddie Vedder."

I FELL INTO THE BURNS ON COMPLETE ACCIDENT . I BELIEVE THAT STEVE POLTZ IS A FINE LIRICYST WITH AGREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. HIS SOLO VENTURE SHOW HIS ABILITY TO GO A LITTLE MORE TO THE SERIOUS SIDE TOO. MOMMY IM SORRY WAS THE FIRST BURNS I HAD HEARD,AND IS STILL PROBABLY MY FAVORITE OF THEIRS. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO SEE STEVE POLTZ OR THE RUGBURNS LIVE, DO IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever on Meth, March 27, 2002

One of the most hilarious events in recent contemporary cool staight-up song writing, the Rugburns (Steve Polz and Rob Driscoll, et al.) deliver a pickup bed load of laughing out loud lyrics and stick in your head songs. The rugs are burning folks everywhere, and finally someone noticed. Essential. Be sure to check out the later work by Steve Polz--While Rob has directed his nefarious methodology at impressionable young citizens, Steve climbs onward with two new CDs. The song remains the same...
