Morrissey Steps Out Of The Shadows On This One,
By
This review is from: The Morning World (Audio CD)
Just for the sake of full disclosure I must first state two facts. #1) I am a huge fan of the artists that Chris Morrissey has played with during his short but very accomplished career. These artists include Mason Jennings, Ben Kweller, and Andrew Bird. #2) I am not much of a jazz fan. I respect the genre and find it very listenable but rarely go out of my way to seek jazz recordings or attend jazz performances. On this CD, Morrissey has made me a believer in the old saying that "birds of feather flock together". He steps out of the long shadows cast by Jennings and Kweller to flex his own musical muscles and show that he is much more than just a hired gun in those bands. After listening to this album you may find yourself wondering what else he is capable of playing. Last week I invited a friend (also not a huge jazz fan) over for morning coffee. I had The Morning World playing in the background. It took him two songs to inquire about the artist. Forty minutes later he was asking to borrow the CD. Do yourself a favor and take a chance on this one....you will not be sorry.

Way to go Chris Morrissey!,

This is an outstanding album. There is something about Morrissey's music that grabs you. It is intelligent and complex; moving comfortably between lush lyrical lines to really kickin' it. The music remains accessible while challenging the listener. The ensemble is tight; complimenting each other and the music with sensitive and accomplished performances. The musicians are without a doubt some of the best around. I highly recommend this album.
