Morningstar in a Black Car, January 8, 2009
This review is from: Morningstar In A Black Car (Audio CD)
Ashbury Heights is one of my favorite up and coming acts in the current goth/industrial scene. I would say their music delves both into the goth and electro genres with a dash of synthpop. Their first album THREE CHEERS FOR THE NEWLYDEAD is a classic for me. I love just how catchy their songs are. MORNINGSTAR IS A BLACK CAR is the group's latest effort. It is a 36 minute EP filled with new songs and remixes. Unfortunately this is the last album that Yasmine would record before she would leave the group for bigger and brighter pastures in the music industry.
That said, the album quickly picks up where THREE CHEERS left off. All of the songs are equally catchy as the first album. I love how Anders and Yasmine's vocals play off one another. The male/female dynamics between their vocals is similiar to the likes of Blutengel and Suicidal Romance. The lyrics are a bit silly especially the chorus for "Die By Numbers" but the catchy pop hooks in the songs makes up for the lyrics. Normally I do not care for the inclusion of remixes but the remixes on this EP are actually pretty good. The remixes do not destroy the essence of the songs which a lot of remixes tends to do. All of the songs on MORNINGSTAR IN A BLACK CAR are great. There wasn't one song I didn't like. I definitely recommend this EP for fans of Ashbury Heights. I personally think it is worth the hefty import price. I was fortunate to find a more affordable copy of the album on the internet.
