Book Description

Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion March 1, 2006
"Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon" is a very important academic book exploring the question of historicity and canonicity -- the relationship (in causality and relational terms) between the experience of human community and the creation (or the interpretation) of a religious text (and the canonization of a religious "text"). This book contains a collection of academic articles ranging from African-American history, Jewish history, early Christian history, the New Testament, Patristic history, medieval history, and the history of the Reformation. This academic work is a bold quest to capture the essence of history and canon as phenomenalized in the human experience. Scholars and students of history, religion, literary criticism, sociology, anthropology, humanities, and theology will surely benefit from reading this book. Although this book is highly academic, it is written in a very readable style so that educated individuals who may not be specialists will benefit from the articles in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Book on Black People, March 7, 2006

I was impressed by this book and found the professor's writing on black people and their experience interesting. It makes a lot of sense that slavery which was an important part of the black experience becomes internalized in the psyche and exhibits itself in literary expression. I would recommend this book to all who have interest in black experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Contribution to African-American Studies, March 5, 2006
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This is a monumental work to African-American studies and I applaud Heerak Christian Kim for such an important contribution to scholarship. I feel that there is so much more need to expose color issues in academia. This book works toward that goal. You will see what I mean if you read this important book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great contribution to American history!, March 5, 2006

I believe that this is a very important book for American history because it tackles difficult issues of slavery and suffering of the people of color. The strength of Kim's analysis is that he takes a creative approach to the examination. Narrative analysis and literary criticism are employed in a symbiotic creation of significant text. This idea makes a lot of sense in light of current advanced research on the topic of signifying of scripture.
