Impressive Book on Black People,
By Hadas Levi (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
I was impressed by this book and found the professor's writing on black people and their experience interesting. It makes a lot of sense that slavery which was an important part of the black experience becomes internalized in the psyche and exhibits itself in literary expression. I would recommend this book to all who have interest in black experience.

Excellent Contribution to African-American Studies,
By Philip Johnson (New Orleans) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This is a monumental work to African-American studies and I applaud Heerak Christian Kim for such an important contribution to scholarship. I feel that there is so much more need to expose color issues in academia. This book works toward that goal. You will see what I mean if you read this important book.

Great contribution to American history!,
By John Leeson (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
I believe that this is a very important book for American history because it tackles difficult issues of slavery and suffering of the people of color. The strength of Kim's analysis is that he takes a creative approach to the examination. Narrative analysis and literary criticism are employed in a symbiotic creation of significant text. This idea makes a lot of sense in light of current advanced research on the topic of signifying of scripture.

Matt Cortez,
By Matt Cortez (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
There was a march for immigration over the weekend in Los Angeles and there were over 500,000 people there. As I marched, I realized how important this book was. It all came together for me -- how Toni Morrison's BELOVED proved to be African-American scripture. I came to think about how the march may be something similar to that for the Mexican community. We Mexicans are creating a type of scripture. Now, I appreciate Prof. Kim's book more. I am eager to read it again with the new insight.

Very Moving,
By Jose Mandez (Mexico City, Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
I found this book very moving. The experience of blacks in America must have been tremendously horrible. I appreciated the empathetic position that Heerak Christian Kim took to capture their experience. I found myself inspired to go and read Toni Morrison.

An Important Work on Ethnic Studies,
By Jose Madrid (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This is a very important work on ethnic studies. The groundbreaking element is in the author's use of genre studies -- particularly relating to the study of fantasy and horror literature -- for explaining the experience of the black people in America. This book will give much intellectual stimulation for academics who can build on the research. There is ample stuff for academic laity to appreciate as well.

A Timely Book on African American Theology,
By Judith Leavi (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Hardcover)
This is a very appropriate book on African-American studies. In an age when affirmative action has been dismantled and African-Americans relegated to the position of secondary citzenry, this book revives our faith in the potential of academia to offer solutions to problems facing the people of color in society. All scholars should learn from Kim.

Terrible book written by a sex pest!,
By Lauren Morgan (Cambridge, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This really is a terribly boring book written by an alleged anti-Semite and sex pest. The usual story about Jews being the cause of all the ills of the world crops up time and time again in Kim's literature; this book is no different. Kim claims that African-Americans are persecuted by Jews, which is utter nonsense. African-Americans have suffered more at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan and other white, Christian racist organisations. I would advise all prospective readers to avoid this book like the plague.

Impressive Book by Lady Davis Fellow!,
By Phil Levison (Tel Aviv, Israel) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This is a very impressive book by a Lady Davis Fellow. Lady Davis was a wealthy noble Jewish lady from Britain who funded many charities and philanthropic enterprises. Lady Davis Fellowship still stands as the most prestigious fellowship an academic can hold in the State of Israel. I applaud Prof. Kim to utilizing his research from Israel to produce such creative scholarship to be shared with the whole world. He is like a candle unto the nations.

African-American Studies At Its Best,
By Rowan Clyde (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toni Morrison's Beloved as African-American Scripture & Other Articles on History and Canon (Hermit Kingdom Studies in History and Religion) (Paperback)
This is a great book on African-American studies. I was moved by Prof. Kim's article and study on Toni Morrison, a premier African-American thinker of our time. I understand that Prof. Kim is doing further research on Toni Morrison and is working on a major academic monograph on the subject. I look forward to this book!
