Original and intriguing, Bodylines is a great read., July 21, 2004
This review is from: Mortal Coils: Bodylines (Paperback)
The world is not quite what it appears to be and regular folks are caught in the middle of things they can't control in A. David Lewis' genre mixing work. Mortal Coils: Bodylines collects his series of stories chronicling what appears to be disparate, surreal events transpiring in the world to seemly disconnected people. The individual stories are intriguing in, and of, themselves, but what makes this collection truly compelling is the way in which Lewis ties the various narratives together. Each story finds ordinary people glimpsing at the darker, more sinister forces lurking behind the mundane world and, at times, falling victim to those forces. Each episode reveals a little bit more of what might be an overall story arch; an arch that seems to offer readers that fuller view of what's behind the things happening to the character we meet. Right now, in these stories, the arch is more of a trajectory of characters; just a hint of what might be down the road. At its conclusion, Mortal Coils: Bodylines leaves you wanting more. This first collection really is a first chapter of what, I hope at least, is a much larger story. With Lewis as the sole writer, various artist complement the story-telling with their visual realizations in an eclectic mix of styles. If you want something original and exciting, pick up this collection.

Tasty & Twisted Tales, February 23, 2005
This review is from: Mortal Coils: Bodylines (Paperback)
Whether comic-book connoisseur, literary buff, or someone simply looking for something more than primetime-variety stimulation ... Mortal Coils is a Must. While I've only recently commenced my foray into the world of graphic novels, I couldn't help but be drawn into the twisted, provocative Coils world - and become utterly mesmerized with the unique and eerily-tangible characters born into it. If catching literary allusions is as gratifying for you as it is for me, a true appreciation of the multi-layered dialogue may mandate hours of companion research through literary & biblical works from your past. But do yourself a favor - don't let my personal obsession with literary innuendos scare you off - even if the last weighty literature you read was an article in Reader's Digest, you won't be able to resist the mind-bending twists that make these tales truly delicious.

Comic Intrigue, January 17, 2005
This review is from: Mortal Coils: Bodylines (Paperback)
Never before had I been exposed to comic books and this being my first one changed all previous ideas I once held for them. This anthology of sci-fi mind bending stories follows no stereotypes and was a thrill to read. The subtleties that are dropped throughout all the stories show Lewis' intellect and enjoyment of writing. Although it was a bit hard to follow at times, these stories are original and show true dedication to an art form that I have recently become aware of. A trully wonderful read.
