Book Description

One short week turned Ree McKenna’s life upside down. Not only does she have the weight of the world on her shoulders, but she still has to juggle homework, a job, and a curfew. While Ree tries to find her footing amidst the chaos, the Dark Ones and their champion are busy hunting down any humans that have a touch of the gods running through their veins. Allies have turned into foes, and enemies have become stronger.

The world is growing darker, but the passion between Ree and two irresistible guys blazes hotter. Romantic ties from a past life will threaten to break Ree away from the love of her life and will cloud her judgment. In order to follow her heart, Ree will break rules put in place by the gods, risking her life and the lives of her friends in an act of Mortal Defiance.

Mortal Defiance is book two of the Dark Betrayal Trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!! December 25, 2011

I really loved this book. I read it in one day and was very happy by the end. Of course I can't wait until the next one comes out. The only thing I'm having trouble with in the book is the way Ree is handling her love life. In a love triangle, I always usually pick a person that I want the main character to end up with. That is not the case with this book. Both guys are just too perfect. Neither have a single fault. I cannot decide, and neither can Ree. Which is really annoying. I feel like she needs to pick one and stop leading the other one on. Other than that, the action was great. Nothing good can come from pissing off a God (or two) so I'm excited to see how much Ree grows and shows off her new amazing powers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defiance Rising - Mortal Defiance is a 2012 Hit. January 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Following on from the exciting release of "Mortal Obligation" in 2011, Georgia author Nichole delivers book 2 in the Dark Betrayal Trilogy, "Mortal Defiance". The premise certainly promises much and, true to form, Nichole Chase delivers, imbuing her rich world with added depth to the characters, heightened tension to her prose and more of the cinematic flourishes that made "Mortal Obligation" such an engaging jump off point. As the title suggests, there is more at stake in "Mortal Defiance" with the Dark Ones ramping up their campaign and wreaking havoc and the heroine, Ree, struggling with her own internal conflict. For a 17 year old girl, living in the midst of a somewhat normal life whilst dealing with a potentially cataclysmic 'other world', it makes for a compelling reading experience.

Nichole's deft hand as a story craftswoman, again shines as she handles the multi-faceted plot line with all it's inherent complexities while maintaining a 'spunkiness' and a dark humour which is intelligent and appealing. "Mortal Defiance" is kinda like Star Wars "The Empire Strikes Back". It takes all the ingredients that made the first instalment so successful and adds to it - depth of character, heightened stakes for the characters and a richer environment for the reader to explore and experience. As such, "Mortal Defiance" is a resounding success and one that will set the stage for a thrilling finale when book 3 lands.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Edge January 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was on edge waiting for this book to be released. What a great series! If this is how Nicole Chase is going to start off her writing career- then she has made me a devoted reader of anything she publishes.

The first book of the Dark Betrayal Story Mortal Obligation introduces us to the Ree and her friends. This book sets up the fight between dark and light. I laughed, I held my breathe, and I even got teary eyed while reading this book. The feelings and emotions that her characters show and experience make you understand their actions even agreeing with them.

I can not wait for March when the third book is released.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first! January 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
(cross-posted from the blog Wading Through Electronic Ink)

Apparently the only thing that people remember from my review of Mortal Obligation was that it contained vampires from outer space. This has apparently led my sister to believe that it is like Plan 9 from Outer Space, which is unfair because Mortal Obligation is much better than Plan 9. There are no tipping cardboard tombstones, and Bela Lugosi does not die in the middle. Really, the fact that the vampires are from space in the Dark Betrayal trilogy is incidental to the plot. So I'm a little sorry if I over-emphasized it in the last post. Clearly I still liked it well enough to read the second one.

I enjoyed Mortal Defiance rather more than I did Mortal Obligation, especially since it had more of a plot and lacked the numerous introduction-of-the-mythology scenes of the first one. As noted above, the mythology is a bit absurd, so everyone is better off thinking of it as a general good vs. evil. The book lost a few points toward the end, because the characters had to explain the mythology for the benefit of their parents.

Paden still has a ridiculous name, but he has decided to be less wishy-washy, which is definitely an improvement. Roland also comes to a decision regarding his feelings for Ree, which leads to exciting drama and competition for highest kill count. And it seems that there may be a secret, spooooky connection between the two boys.

The one thing that felt off in the novel was the "missions" that Ree and her friends went on. They go out investigating vampire activity, but at each point they observe that this is not the "final battle" that they are waiting for. I don't understand why, since they know who all the players are, they don't just skip ahead to this final battle.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Autumn Review for Mortal Defiance October 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Funny story: I read this entire book while sitting in an ER waiting room. No joke. I sat there from 3pm-9pm. One good thing about it, was that it was like sitting in my own paranormal world. I felt like I was right there with Ree, fighting off bad guys.

Ok, now on THIS story. Mortal Obligation (book 1) ends with a bang. I was left anxious and wanting more of the story. Well, in MD, we begin to learn more about this world of gods and alien/vampires. I felt like I was getting a clearer picture of where the story was going.

I still like Ree. In fact, I liked her even more in this book. She's a strong lead character that isn't afraid to get in the thick of a fight. Ree is determined to keep her family and friends safe.

While she's often conflicted about her past lives memories and her current feelings, there is no doubt in my mind that Paden is the one for her. I mean really....for me, there would be no choice. Yes, Roland is attractive in his own right, but Paden takes the prize for me. Check this out.

~"You're the only girl that I want to be with. The only girl I look forward to seeing walk into a room. When I'm not with you, all I can think about is getting back to you. When you touch me, it's like fire running through my veins."-loc 1725

See what I mean. He's absolutely perfect. Not only can he protect her, but he really truly loves her. I really appreciated seeing their relationship move further. *winks*

Mortal Defiance was an enjoyable middle book. It did exactly what I needed it to do. The story built, the tension grew, and relationships got stronger. If you're looking for an exciting YA Paranormal, check this one out. The last book in the series, Immortal Grave, recently released too, so you can read them all together!

5.0 out of 5 stars So good.
Just as good as the first one but even a little better. So much action. The loss of some of the characters during the book was sad but necessary.
