Long have I waited for a great Mortal Kombat game to hit once again. And finally the wait paid off. Not since Mortal Kombat 2 has Mortal Kombat been as much fun. But i'm sorry to say that all is not as good as it seems...I give the game 3 1/2 stars really.

First off, the fighting system is completely revamped. Finally stepping into the realm of true 3d (Mortal Kombat 4 was nothing more than a 2d fighting game with 3d models), the game play is as fast and furious as ever. With the ability to switch between 3 different fighting styles, one of which is weapon based, the combo possibilities are increased more than ever. Full 3d movement and detail make this probably the best MK since MK2...

But then there are the problems. The fighting styles, while a great new addition, aren't all they're cracked up to be. The amount of combos you can do are limited, and the stance change button does not always work when you want it to(namely in the middle of a combo when it is most useful). As with most MK games, the AI is extraordinarily cheap at times...it always seems to know exactly what you're going to do, and beats the crud out of you before you can even pull a move off.

The juggling system is awful. The AI abuses it so much that you'll find yourself walking away from the game in frustration. You can easily lose in about 10 seconds if the computer keeps you backed up against the (invisible)walls surrounding the arena, because you'll be juggled so much you'll probably never even hit the ground.

Some characters are just completely worthless, namely the new character Drahmin, who has absolutely no combo moves whatsoever. The only way to defeat an opponent is by furious button mashing and pure luck. He relies far too heavily and special moves. The same goes for returning character Cyrax. While he has a few good combos, his moves are far too limited and he must rely mostly on his special moves. And many weapon styles are far too similar...some of them are totally identical to each other, except that the actual weapons look different.

Fatality fans will be very disappointed...each character has only one fatality. While a few of these fatalities are quite good, the greater majority of them are just awful. Quan Chi's fatality in particular is by far the worst Fatality that the Mortal Kombat series has ever seen. And there are no arena-based fatalities...how the creators can even dare to have an arena called the 'Acid Bath' or the 'Lava Shrine' and not have an arena based fatality is beyond comprehension. It seems that once again, the design team opted for total laziness in the Finishing Moves department, as they have ever since MK3.

Story, which has always been one of the best parts of MK, is no let down in this game. The addition of Konquest mode, which takes you through 10 missions to help explain character story and train you in the use of that particular character is a great addition. It helps you to earn 'Kurrency' which can be used to be secrets in the 'Krypt', a room full of 676 'Koffins' that are bought using your earned 'Kurrency'. The problem there is that out of 676 Koffins, about 620 of them are total 'Krap'. Character endings also leave alot to be desired...some just make no sense whatsoever, or are too short to explain anything. Others, however, are shocking and surprising.

Overall, the game just suffers from two major things: the feeling of being incomplete, and something that all MK fans should be used to by now: Empty Promises. Some characters are just too limited and feel like they were rushed. Some character's Konquest modes also seem to be completely rushed, being devoid of story and lacking rhyme or reason. As far as empty promises, many things that the development team promised when they were creating the game just did NOT make it in: Torn clothing on characters is nowhere to be found, weapon combat is far too basic(it was said to 'Rival Soul Calibur'), and a few other things that just seem annoying when you realize they aren't there.

If it seems that i'm coming down way too hard on this game...I apologize. I have been a fan of MK since it first debuted in Arcades in 1992. I just feel that Deadly Alliance could've been so much more than it actually is. To close this review off, I will list some of the high points of the game:

The story is outstanding. I challenge anyone to find a fighting game with a story as deep as this. Even Soul Calibur's story pales in comparison. The combat is fast paced and action packed...unlike Tekken or Virtua Fighter, which is slow paced and dreadfully boring. Characters look better and more detailed than ever. Arenas, although simplistic and basic in terms of interaction and maneuverability, are highly detailed and gorgeous. The addition of Kurrency, Konquest Mode and The Krypt fuel the replay value and will keep you coming back for weeks. Tons of characters both old and new offer lots of variety.

Overall, a great game that could've been perfect, had it not been for that feeling of being incomplete, or being victim of laziness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood and Violence Make up This Game, March 15, 2003
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
As I said in the title, there is a lot of graphically gross action. However, that is not a bad thing! Games such as Virtua Fighter 4 are good for their toned-down style of fighting, but for fanatics of swords, blood, and chopping people into little pieces, this is a great game! At first, the blood was annoying until I figured out that it could be turned down, or even off. That was a relief! Fighting with swords and weapons is the best aspect of the game, along with being able to chage fighting styles in the middle of a round. The characters look good, with awesome effects added to them. Some of the characters are almost scary, such as the main sorcerer. Graphically, the game has a few minor flaws, but the engine runs smoothly and the characters, moves, and levels all look exceptional! For the ultimate in violent fighting, Mortal Kombat DA is appropriate!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love MK!!!, January 3, 2003
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
I am a veteran of the original Mortal Kombat for SNES, and didn't play any of the other games until this one came out. The great thing is, they didn't change it too much and the graphics are awesome. I don't like how Liu Kang is dead, but there are still a lot of good characters. You can now use weapons, which appropriately increase your offense but decrease your defense. Some characters can use their weapons to impale their opponent, which is irreversible and makes the other character's health decline slowly until the end of the match. Besides the weapons there are two other martial arts styles per character. This is useful for combos and enemies you would normally be weak against. The fatalities are AWESOME!!! They even added a humorous character who vomits as a special move and farts to regain health. Here's a list of playable characters:

-Sonya Blade
-Nitara
-Cyrax
-Sub-Zero
-Bo Rai Cho
-Scorpion
-Li Mei
-Frost
-Mavado (awesome new character!)
-Jax Briggs
-Kung Lao

-Shang Tsung
-Kenshi
-Kano
-Johnny Cage
-Quan Chi
-Drahmin
-Hsu Hao
-Kitana
-Rayden
-Reptile
-Blaze
-Mokap

If you love fighting and brutality, you HAVE to get this game!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat has resurrected...with a Deadly Alliance!!, June 22, 2002

Mortal Kombat is back and it never looked so good. That's right, and this time you will have to increase your strenght to defeat a very deadly alliance formed by the right hand of Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, and a more powerful and more evil Quan Chi.

Incredible real graphics, with dripping blood, clothes ripping, and with fully interactive 3-D arenas, over 20 of them. Also, you will see the return of your favorite characters (Rayden, Jax, Sonya, Scorpion, Subzero, Kitana, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, and many more) and also a whole new cast, including Blind Kenshi, Moloch, Mavado, Female Subzero, and many, many more...over 20 characters in total.

But this isn't just about graphics and characters, because it now includes a great variety in the gameplay. The biggest change is the ability to change your fighting style (Karate, Taekwondo...) in the middle of a fight, giving you bigger and better combos. Each character will have three different fighting techniques.

Also, you'll be seen completely new fatalities, brutal and bloody, just the way we like it..

4.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, January 6, 2003
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
Mortal Kombat DA was pretty good as a whole and an excellent boost from the last game (Mortal Kombat 4). The game itself is awesome. A new fighting system that gives each fighter a weapon and 2 different fighting styles. That adds a little more "personal" element to the series rather than the original format of everyone has a high kick, low kick, high punch and low punch. Now, everyone fights different. Plus there are some pretty cool things that you can do with the weapons.

There are some returning characters in this one, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Sub Zero, Kano. Kung Lao and of course, Scorpian. And of course, where is Mortal Kombat without new characters and hidden characters?! There are 9 hidden characters that you must unlock and 3 new selectable characters to start with. EXCELLENT!

I could only think of 2 down sides to this game. Shang Tsung has been made a lot less cheap than usual and CANNOT MORPH into anyone anymore. Some of the Fatalities are really good and some of the others are really dumb. Example, newcomer Bo Rai Cho. Trust me, when you see it you'll in comparison of new Fatalities from Kano, Cage and Scorpian.

I gotta give this one a big thumbs up because no longer is this game truly impossible if you can't do the combo system. It's nice to know the combos (which might I add are little easier to perform as well), but you can't fight it out as well. Slightly like Tekken's style of combat but I still have to say that Mortal Kombat is still it's own game. The 3 fighting styles per fighter usually doesn't make a difference in the fight itself. It's just cool to do basically.

And my last final note on why I enjoyed this game. Shao Khan is dead! Personally, I was getting sick of his character. The other really great thing is that LIU KANG is dead also!! For me, that's a personal bonus to play because now I no longer have to deal with people who don't know how to play (ie use the combos) but can do Liu's cheap moves over and over and over again!

Either way it goes, Mortal Kombat DA is a quality game and definitely worth picking up. Check it out you might be impressed with the new facelift that is Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat has returned. After some disappointments, midway finally took the concept back to the ground and rebuilt it. The new fighting system is great. Every character has three fighting styles (one of those includes a weapon). Old characters return such as: Scorpion, Sub Zero, Sonya, Jax. New character emerge like: Frost, Malvado, Nitara. Even the fighting arenas have been revamped. Most of the arenas have interactive environments. Knock your opponent into a pilar and watch it crack and crumble. Even watch your opponent start to sweat, bleed, get his or her clothing ripped and most important of all die from the new and improved fatalities. For those of you who thought Mortal Kombat was dead think again. Deadly Alliance will resurrect the MK craze.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, December 1, 2002
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
When I was 11 and 12, I remember being at the arcades with people standing in line waiting to play whatever new Mortal Kombat game was out at the time. Years later after the franchise struggled and lost it's edge, Midway brings us Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance; A new chapter in the ongoing battle between good vs. evil.

With returning characters Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jax, Cyrax, etc. and new characters such as Kenshi, Hsu Hao, Frost, Li Mei, Mavado, Molach, etc, this game has alot of bloody action to keep everyone entertained.

3D graphics enhance realism such as characters dripping with blood during fights, sweating, clothes ripping, hair moving in the wind or getting wet, etc. The ice that Sub-Zero throws to freeze people comes out in glaciers instead of a round ball like in past games. The rope Scorpion throws at characters to drag them to where ever he's at, moves like an actual rope would; jerking and moving with the wind or whichever environment he happens to be in. The powder Sonya blows in people's faces to momentarily blind them comes out in a dark purple/pink dust - very realistic compared to the rings that she used to fire out of her wrists in other games.

Overall, this game will please any true Mortal Kombat fan. More characters to choose from, different arenas, new moves and fatalities help make this the most fun and deadliest Kombat of all.

Well, I have been waiting a long time for the next installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, and I have mixed reviews. First of all, the storyline,as always, is excellent. The characters have been expanded upon since Mortal Kombat 1, and this game adds another beautiful layer to the mythology. The added features are unreal, the Krypt alone is work hours upon hours of play. The added images and video in content is great as well. But I must say that the actual graphics of the game are pretty poor. There are cool effects like dripping blood and bruised faces, but the textures are too bad to really show off this cool idea. (The winning pose scene for Sonja makes me cring watching it everytime I play her....low-poly, simplistic textures, yuck.)The opening cinematic sequence is really bad. The animation is poor, the models are poor as well. With all of that said, it is still an extremely fun game to play. I was an arcade rat who played mk2, mk3 and mk4 religously, so in the end, I am addicted to all things Mortal Kombat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game, but not exactly a flawless victory, November 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
This game is a lot of fun and very addictive. I played it for hours and hours straight. You start out with about 12 characters and the rest are left up to you to unlock the others. Some of my favorite characters are left to be unlocked so I have work to do (i.e. Raiden, Reptile, Cyrax, Jax, etc.)! The gameplay is excellent and the new fighting styles add even more fun (each character has access to 3 fighting styles during the match). Also, "The Krypt" feature is cool. It is a place where you go and buy stuff with the MK currency you earn with the profile you create for yourself. I think this is where you unlock some characters, videos, alternate outfits, etc. You never know what you are going to get until you purchase one of the coffins in "The Krypt." Overall, the game is great.

Now, for the one flaw. The fatalities are somewhat lame. So far, I see that each character has only one fatality...and they are somewhat lame. For sure they are not what you would expect from a game like this. They lack the creativity from previous MK's. Also, there are no pits to punch anyone into. Hopefully, there are more fatalities for the characters other than the ones I've seen. You think they would be able to tack on more fatalities to each character, considering they were able to give each one 3 different fighting styles (each loaded with different moves). Hopefully I am wrong and there are more fatalities left to be discovered. However, so far I've read that there are no more. Fatalities are one feature that set MK above the rest. When they are somewhat disappointing, then that takes away from the MK experience.

Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone, especially fans of the previous MK's. It's excellent fighting system will keep you playing for hours and hours, like I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fighting game out there, December 14, 2002
This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)
There are basically 2 types of fighting games out therem the ones that require a lot of stradgy (Virtua Fighter 4, Bushido Blade) and Button Mashers (Tekken, Dragon Ball Z Boudoki). For most gamers they are one or the other. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance however is a first, in what I mean is that it is both a button masher and a stradgy style. Let me explain.

Each Kombatant has 3 styles, two martial arts and one weapon. Unlike #4 you don't lose your weapon when hit, and they don't do extreme amounts of damage when used. However like the two styles they can be used to string comboes together. However on the same token it is not neccesary to learn stradegy to beat story mode (it can help but not neccesary).

The story revolves around Shang Tsung and Quan Chi teaming up to take over both earthrealm and OUtworld. After Vanquishing the two realms greatest champions (Shao Kahn and Lui Kang) they set forth a series of events to conquer the two relms. Raiden relinqueshes his status as elder god to take on this force. He allies himself with Kung Lao, Sub-Zero and his apprentice Frost, Sonya, Jax, and Johney Cage. They then set forth to take out Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. Also in the mix are the returning Scorpion, Kitana, Kano, and Cyrax. The new characters are very diversed as well, from Bo Rai Cho and his prefered style of Drunken Fighting, to Mei Li who wants to rescue her clan, to Kenshi the blind warrior out to slay Shang Tsung, to Drahmin an Oni from the Netherrelm.

The one thing that did not change (besides the awsome Fatalities) is the fact that the sub boss (past guys were Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro) is the creature called Molock. Molock has no specific skills, little fighting moves, but is very fast, relelntless, blocks a lot, and is powerful. This makes for a very frustrating battle with some characters. However with others it is a cake walk (well sort of).

Overall this is the best fighting game out there for the average gamer. It doesn't require a lot of time memorizing skills and timing that virtua fighter 4 requires, yet at the same time is not as simplistic and a pushover that Tekken 4 is. This is the must own fighting game for the average gamer.
