This review is from: Mortal Kombat: Deception (Video Game)
This game is the latest game in the series, and in my opinion one of the best. Though it may not have as many of the characters as some of the others, it does have a great variety of characters; old favorites like Baraka, Mileena, and Liu Kang, (all of whom were absent from the last game). My favorite character is Noob/Smoke, who as MK fans may have guessed is two characters in one. Another one of my favorite characters is the newest one to the mix: Shujinko. Both of these are my favorite, because of their wide range of combos, and special moves.
For this version they revamped the Konquest mode, and made into a sort of RPG, with lots of side games, and battles. The story is pretty straight forward and laid out so if you want you can beat all the side quests you want and it won't interfere with anything. In fact I personally think the side quests are a little harder, but a little more rewarding. The story itself goes from the first Mortal Kombat all the way up to the start of this game as well, but you're playing as an unknown character named Shujinko. In this game you also get a little background info on some of the other characters. As with the last game you still at some point have to train with the different characters, but not all of them. Some are conveniently left out like Noob/Smoke, and Shujinko himself. If you've played the last game you might know that the hardest part of learning how to use a certain character is mastering his/her different style-branch combos. For these you just have to keep at it, and eventually you'll get it. They were at least nice enough not to go into the more difficult combos that require more than one style change.
Now on to what we really want to hear about: The Fighting. I don't know how exactly they did it but the grapics are actually better than Deadly Alliance. The fighting itself is the same old goryness you would expect from a Mortal Kombat game, but then again who wants it to change. The arenas are better than the last game and are sort of a cross between the arenas of Deadly Alliance, and other previous ones. I say this because there are actually two parts to the arenas now. After you get bumped into the second part of the arena, there is a death trap that automatically kills you if you get bumped into it. Also as a knew feature to this game there are a couple of weapons in certain arenas you can pick up and use like your main weapon. Now you may be asking yourselves about the fatalities, well in this game each character has two, yes TWO, along with a special Hara-Kiri move if you lose. These are just as greusome as ever, but sometimes they can seem to be a bit repetitive, because half of them involve someone's neck being broken, or someone ripping someone else's head completely off.
Now as well there are Puzzle Kombat (which is just a MK version of tetris) and Chess Kombat, which is my personal favorite. In both these games there is a lot of strategy involved, so it keeps you on your toes, but it still keeps the fighting element you know and love. And let's not forget the newest feature of them all, the online feature. All in all this is a great game and not just for the long-time MK fans, but also for the people just getting into Mortal Kombat. 5 stars

If you are a mortal kombat fan then this game is a must buy, everything is better than deadly alliance. If you are not familiar with mortal kombat franchise then you are missing out big time. Mortal kombat is the best fighter game, better than soul calibur, tekkan, virtual fighter, street fighter, dead or alive, and guity gear. This game in my book is a top 5 game of all time. This game is very violent, sick, and twisted! So if you are a parent do not get this game for your kids.
The intro is awesome, nice real computer graphics, much better than deadly alliance! The loading scenes look better too. While Mortal Kombat Deception might not have the best stage graphics but the stage design is the best. Each stage feels like a realm. However, the graphic of the characters is SUPERB, slightly more detail, real, and shiny. The graphic of the weapons, projectiles, and clashing is SUPERB too. The sound is great too! Then the RED BLOOD, lots of blood! Like previous mortal kombat, each character has 4 levels of "damage wear", as the match ends your character might look beaten up depending on your energy. So its nice to retain high health when you kill your friends off then the "untouched" pose kicks in confirming your superiority! Or it can be a "ugly" victory. And the infamous fatalities, now 2!! The stage fatalities are cool and more strategic and better but they dont work like old school mortal kombat games, for example you can knock the opponent into the pit DURING the fight if you force him off the edge of ground unlike old school mortal kombat you do all stage fatalities AFTER you win the round. The stage design is much better than deadly alliance with multi-tiers too!
GAMEPLAY: The fighting engine is TRUELY A WORK OF ART. It feels SO balanced, you have to play to believe! The 3 fighting style design is awesome. You have total control! You can fight with or without weapons. There are connector or juggle moves for each style so its very easy to do YOUR OWN CUSTOM COMBOS. This game is easy for all new comers but this game is very very deep.
This game plays and feels like its got the best world of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken. JUST SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE! The story and setting of this game is cool, it feels fantastical, mythological, and futuristic. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi are gone. It would be nice if there was a shape-shifter in mortal kombat games....
WARNING: To unlock the hidden character, customes, and stages you HAVE to play the konquest mode so you have to work for them! The konquest mode is a training mode but its pretty good and better than deady alliance. You get to travel and learn about mortal kombat world and characters. The graphics for konquest mode is not that good, it gets the job done. The bonus chess game is not a traditional chess game nor the old school battle chess type and when you konquer a piece you have to fight that piece via a regular arcade type match. Pretty disappointing but the tetris like game is better.
Graphics: 4.5/5, Sound: 3/5, Gameplay: 5/5, Story: 5/5, Replay: 5/5, Fun: 5/5, control: 4.75/5
12/10: My copy of Deception was weird. The sides of the screen bends in a bit, like an hourglass shape. Then just yesterday the game crashed in Konquest mode. So I exchanged for a NEW copy and the distortion totally disappeared! Both sides of the screen have perfect straight line now. I thought ALL copies should be the same, this was very weird.... Midway?
With online play this game is so sweet!!!!! Overall this game is awesome, a must buy! Don't forget to check out Mortal Kombat the movie and Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

This is one of the best MK games ever. It features many modes of game play. There is arcade mode, the basic fighting to the top mode, Chess Kombat, a chess like game with a special twist and MK charactors, Puzzle Kombat,an interesting puzzle game with fatalities, and Konquest mode, an open world mode whwere you play as Shujinko to help him in his life long mission to "help the Elder gods." There is also the Krypt where you purchase items and unlock them, such as fighters and prodution art, and Kontent, where you view your unlocked items.
Pros:
*Awesome graphics
*Fun gameplay
*Level fatalities
*Many old charactors, Such as Sindel, Jade, and Kabal
*Many game modes
Cons:
*Many charactors are missing, like Sonya and Johnny Cage
*Can seem too bloody at times
*Konquest mode can get too repetative and not fun alot
Story:
Earthrealms best heroes were defeated by the deadly alliance leaving only Raiden to defend Earthrealm, but was defeated, and the DA had won. But they soon turned on each other, leaving Quan Chi the winner. But the Dragon King, Onaga, returned from death to reclaim Outworld and a new alliance was formed in desperation of Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and Raiden. Seeing that They would lose Raiden released a large amount of power to defeat Onaga, Killing the three. Onaga didn't even get a scratch from it. Now you must defeat Onaga, to save the world.
This is an awesome game, but has little appeal to non MK fans.
