First of all, if you are a tournament fighting game player, MK is probably not going to impress a lot of you. The mechanics in MK9, and the whole series, involve this start-stop method by making you press a separate button to block. It's really not as fluid as Street Fighter, per se, but it does work well once you figure out the timing patterns.
But, moving right along, this is a stellar fighting game! This time around, MK has gone back to the roots of cheesy Kung Fu anacronisms combined with ultra-gory fatalities. The game features cosmetic battle gore, an EX meter, and some amazing stage artwork. The story mode is pretty long and has a good overall plot arc, although it does force you to fight as a pre-determined fighter at each chapter, and also has a few meaningless fights. Still, this is the best story mode for a fighting game to date!
The Ex meter can be built in a number of ways: first hits, specials, and using your face to absorb blows. It has three levels. At level 1, you can do an enhanced special with added effects and/or damage. At level 2, you can break a combo someone is doing to you. At level 3, you can unleash a devastating X-ray move. The X-ray moves really are the star of the game. They are easy to learn, but can be hard to master at times. When they land, you unleash an extremely gory combo that looks like it would kill your opponent, but that's just for eye candy. They do a lot of damage though, and can easily turn the tide of a match.
The game has a nice dial-a-combo system, where you can chain a bunch of small combos together to create larger ones. Depending on the moves involved, the effectiveness varies.Read more ›
First things first. For my purposes, this is the best MK imho. It looks awesome (compared to any other MK), it has a real story (which is amazing for a single player game) and it has you hopping between different characters in the "single player" story experience (you can also do traditional ladder progression in single player if you prefer without a story and just with one character). The story experience is all that matters to me and in that it succeeds. It is fun. The story is mostly nonsensical and it basically "retells" the story from the original MK's (1-3, maybe beyond), but with a Star Trek reboot-like twist: Raiden has screwed around with his own timeline. Apparently, he can reach out to himself and tell himself that he's messed up, so he gets one phrase and an image to send himself from another timeline.
Of course, since it's vague, he doesn't get it quite right and he doesn't understand his own meaning. This means that things that should have been fixed are not fixed and things that were fine get mucked up, which leads to chaos and changes that will greatly impact the MK universe going forward...
That's the awesome. Truly. Other great things are the graphics during gameplay, the x-ray moves, having options to change for the graphics, the overall experience of the game itself, includes all the DLC except Kratos (PS3 exclusive), and the fact that the Xbox 360 controller is recognized easily and quickly by the game...
Now here's what's bad. First, it's two years old. I don't know why WB would take this long to port the game, but that's just downright annoying.Read more ›

This is better than MKX way better, seems like MKX was trying to sell us a new lineup that was far too realistic and bland while killing off all of our favorites. Read morePublished 4 months ago by cbtechone
