It's all here!

First of all, if you are a tournament fighting game player, MK is probably not going to impress a lot of you. The mechanics in MK9, and the whole series, involve this start-stop method by making you press a separate button to block. It's really not as fluid as Street Fighter, per se, but it does work well once you figure out the timing patterns.

But, moving right along, this is a stellar fighting game! This time around, MK has gone back to the roots of cheesy Kung Fu anacronisms combined with ultra-gory fatalities. The game features cosmetic battle gore, an EX meter, and some amazing stage artwork. The story mode is pretty long and has a good overall plot arc, although it does force you to fight as a pre-determined fighter at each chapter, and also has a few meaningless fights. Still, this is the best story mode for a fighting game to date!

The Ex meter can be built in a number of ways: first hits, specials, and using your face to absorb blows. It has three levels. At level 1, you can do an enhanced special with added effects and/or damage. At level 2, you can break a combo someone is doing to you. At level 3, you can unleash a devastating X-ray move. The X-ray moves really are the star of the game. They are easy to learn, but can be hard to master at times. When they land, you unleash an extremely gory combo that looks like it would kill your opponent, but that's just for eye candy. They do a lot of damage though, and can easily turn the tide of a match.

The game has a nice dial-a-combo system, where you can chain a bunch of small combos together to create larger ones. Depending on the moves involved, the effectiveness varies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game December 30, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
I was hesitant to buy this game on PC but I decided to take advantage of the recent holiday sales discount and couldn't be more pleased. I was hesitant because I previously bought the "Mortal Kombat Kollection" on PC and felt disappointed in the gameplay. The controls didn't feel as responsive as the console versions. Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition on the other hand plays great. However, potential buyers should be aware that my low-end video card caused the automatic configuration of the graphics settings to be set on low quality with a resolution of 1176 x 664. When I try to raise the settings and change resolution settings, the game crashes. I have a Nvidia GeForce GT 530 graphics card with 2GB of memory. The game operated fine on low settings but I'd recommend buyers have at least a mid-range graphics card in order to get the most out of this PC version of MK. I will be upgrading to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 graphics card very soon and expect to play MK a lot more often when I can (hopefully) maximize the graphics settings.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Fun, but Beware the Bugs! October 28, 2013

It's pretty much the Mortal Kombat from 2011, but be weary. I have a PC that can run circles around this game but even on low settings I get this weird slow motion effect. From what I've heard, you MIGHT need an extremely powerful PC to play this at full speed due to the port's quality. But who knows, it could work for you! Either way, this game is a bucket of fun with your friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Okay October 11, 2013

The game is okay. It's clearly a console port. It suffers from poor PC optimization. I got it on sale so can't really complain.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Mortal Kombat August 29, 2013
By David

As the title implies, it's Mortal Kombat. This feels a lot more like the classic Mortal Kombat games (1-3) before they turned it into a 3 dimensional game. I have played this on the Xbox 360 as well as the PC and they seem to perform identically as far as the controls; however, I don't have an Xbox copy at the moment to compare the graphics to, As a preface, I enjoy fighting games but am in no way and expert at them.

The Good:
The story is fun and campy. I really enjoyed this addition to the game. The story doesn't ignore the old games, it pulls a Star Trek and takes you back in time.
The character selection is massive and the move sets varied.
The gore is not toned down one bit, parents... this isn't a kids game. It's rated M for a reason.
My buddy and I had a blast playing versus but I haven't taken the fight online yet.

There are a few downsides though.

The animations look a bit clunky in the story mode cut scenes.
And the pre-rendered cut scenes look pretty bad.
I have heard that player 1 gets a slight advantage in multiplayer matches.

Overall, if you enjoy Mortal Kombat, you should enjoy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great game, Windows meh.
They didn't do a great job porting the game, has some occasional issues with video and crashing. I managed to fool around with it to get it mostly stable though, so it's possible.
