4.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat review, June 13, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mortal Kombat (3.5" disk)
I have reviewed a lot of that I grew up playing like The Street Fighter franchise Zelda & Streets Of Rage among many others. I've never reviewed the entire Mortal Kombat franchise. So what better way to start off by reviewing Mortal Kombat released in 1992 which was originally going to be based off of Bloodsport with Jean Claude Van Damme. Which never panned out & I'm glad I'd rather have Mortal Kombat which was suppose to be a quick project with Ed Boon & John Tobias. When you play MK 1 to MK 4 you can tell it's made by the same group with the same vision. Mortal Kombat turned out to be a huge success & got ported a to lot of systems. The story is Shang Tsung has defeated Earth's best worries in 9 straight tournaments he has 1 more to win before he can claim Earth for Outworld's ruler Shao Kahn. To get Shang Tsung you have you go through 6 opponents face yourself go through endurance fight Goro which can be a pain all to fight Shang Tsung. You got Liu Kang from China he is after Shang Tsung for killing his fellow people. Johnny Cage who is based off Jean Claude Van Damme. He entered The Tournament to prove he is for real. Sonya Blade who is after a criminal named Kano who has killed a lot of people. Sub Zero & Scorpion you learn about there feud in later inslallments & of course Raiden The God of Thunder & Lightning. The thing that made MK 1 -MK triilogy unique was the use of digitized actors I know Pit Fighter did it before but Pit Fighter was s h it t y. Also it had gore which was key even Ed Boon said " If Mortal Kombat didn't have the blood & gore it wouldn't have been popular." Around this time there was there was a lot of fuss made in video game violence there were even hearings in Washington DC which lead to The ESRB. I'am more partial to Street Fighter MK just had more story to it. Unlike most fighting games Mortal Kombat is made right here in The US. The coolest thing is fighting the hidden character Reptile. In the earlier versions of the game he's listed as Scorpion others he has no name. Finally they just called him Reptile. The whole thing with Ermac was that it was an error. where it's either Scorpion or Reptile colored ornge or red. Mortal Kombat like I said was ported to a lot of systems The SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PC & all the handhelds. Stay away from The SNES version it's censored it looks great but plays terrible. The Genesis & Sega CD versions are great Sega CD version has loading times though & a lot of them that's a downside. If you have a PS2 or X BOX & The MK Deception special edition you got the arcade version of MK 1. Or on MAME. Next were going to Outworld & fight Shao Kahn.
