The 3d environment is great. It's definately better than MK Mythologies. I like the fact that you can use weapons, too. The only problem is that sometimes the camera angles are bad, making it difficult to see who's shooting at you, or where you're going. I hope they include some characters from this game in future MK games, like No Face, Tasia, and Tremor.

Mortal Kombat Special Forces......, August 10, 2005

Because of the new Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks game coming out, I decided to get all my old MK games out to play. Among them was Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and this lil gem. Despite what everyone has had to say about the game, Special Forces isn't that bad a game. I mean, if you're any MK fan at all, you're going to get this one just to keep up with the Mortal Kombat mythos. I especially enjoyed the game because it explained alot of the backstory as to how Jax and Sonya first got into MK. I'll admit, however, why they chose Jax to have a starring role in an MK game of his own is beyond me. Not that Jax is a bad character and fighter in the game, he's one of my favorites. It's just there are other more beloved characters from the universe that they could have used. When you think about it, that could be the reason why people didn't make this a big seller, at the time. At any rate, I loved the game. For the first time, it was a Mortal Kombat game that took place in an actual 3-D environment. Fighting is intense with the basic, special, and combination moves.
The only reason why I gave the game 4 stars was because of certain control issues it had. They really hindered my enjoyment getting into the game at times.
Other than that, Mortal Kombat Special Forces is an awesome game. It's a game any respectable Mortal Kombat fan would and should add to their collection.

Moderately enjoyable, February 6, 2010

When I bought this game, I already owned a ps2 and a gamecube. So, obviously I never saw it in it's prime.
But, as a stand alone game to todays standards, I can tell you this. It IS an enjoyable game, with a mortal kombat style button mashing fighting system mixed with some long distance directional-aiming assault rifles.
Levelling up in this game is a cool feature too, since you get new combos which can do progessively more damage or just look cooler. It's also satisfying to watch Jax's metal fists pound into the face of some guy in a suit and watch him crumple, but maybe thats just me.
The sniper rifle was also well done, and all the sniping areas are an enjoyable part of the game that lives up to how future titles run sniping. Headshot!!
The combos get repetitive, quick, especially when you reach about mid-level and you find yourself doing the exact same 5 hit combo 37 times every level. Then you get new combos, and they actually aren't more damaging... so you just keep doing the same 5 hit uppercut combo. There IS a few interesting 'specials' that you can do which are pretty darn cool, but because you have an extremely limited power bar, you never get to use them that much. And with only 4 specials anyway, that kinda gets old after a while too.
The puzzles are just mindless trash... 'find all the lisence plates', 'get the key off the boss', 'run around in circles till you find the secret door you missed', and other stuff that just gets in the way of killin' some more baddies but does do us the favor of breaking up the monotony of the 5-hit combo.
The announcer voices are entertaining, and the chick over the radio has a pleasant voice too, but Jax's voice overs are corny and barely passable.
The music isn't anything too memorable, the graphics are actually a nice par for the playstation 1, and the storyline is totally uninvolving- until the end where it starts to get interesting for about 1 level.
My biggest complaint with this game is that it is too short. I don't remember how long it took me to beat this game, but I would guess it was in the 4-6 hour range. After buying and taking it home THAT DAY, one could guess I was a little dissapointed in my ten dollar investment.
This game is fun, but hey, it's a game, if it's not fun it should be burned at the stake for having magical witch powers of evil that can somehow make a game unfun.
Personally I wouldn't recommend buying the game unless you were just bored and wanted to try something new, or there really wasn't anything else to buy at the time.
