The 3d environment is great. It's definately better than MK Mythologies. I like the fact that you can use weapons, too. The only problem is that sometimes the camera angles are bad, making it difficult to see who's shooting at you, or where you're going. I hope they include some characters from this game in future MK games, like No Face, Tasia, and Tremor.

Because of the new Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks game coming out, I decided to get all my old MK games out to play. Among them was Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and this lil gem. Despite what everyone has had to say about the game, Special Forces isn't that bad a game. I mean, if you're any MK fan at all, you're going to get this one just to keep up with the Mortal Kombat mythos. I especially enjoyed the game because it explained alot of the backstory as to how Jax and Sonya first got into MK. I'll admit, however, why they chose Jax to have a starring role in an MK game of his own is beyond me. Not that Jax is a bad character and fighter in the game, he's one of my favorites. It's just there are other more beloved characters from the universe that they could have used. When you think about it, that could be the reason why people didn't make this a big seller, at the time. At any rate, I loved the game. For the first time, it was a Mortal Kombat game that took place in an actual 3-D environment. Fighting is intense with the basic, special, and combination moves.
The only reason why I gave the game 4 stars was because of certain control issues it had. They really hindered my enjoyment getting into the game at times. Other than that, Mortal Kombat Special Forces is an awesome game. It's a game any respectable Mortal Kombat fan would and should add to their collection.

When I bought this game, I already owned a ps2 and a gamecube. So, obviously I never saw it in it's prime.
But, as a stand alone game to todays standards, I can tell you this. It IS an enjoyable game, with a mortal kombat style button mashing fighting system mixed with some long distance directional-aiming assault rifles. Levelling up in this game is a cool feature too, since you get new combos which can do progessively more damage or just look cooler. It's also satisfying to watch Jax's metal fists pound into the face of some guy in a suit and watch him crumple, but maybe thats just me. The sniper rifle was also well done, and all the sniping areas are an enjoyable part of the game that lives up to how future titles run sniping. Headshot!! The combos get repetitive, quick, especially when you reach about mid-level and you find yourself doing the exact same 5 hit combo 37 times every level. Then you get new combos, and they actually aren't more damaging... so you just keep doing the same 5 hit uppercut combo. There IS a few interesting 'specials' that you can do which are pretty darn cool, but because you have an extremely limited power bar, you never get to use them that much. And with only 4 specials anyway, that kinda gets old after a while too. The puzzles are just mindless trash... 'find all the lisence plates', 'get the key off the boss', 'run around in circles till you find the secret door you missed', and other stuff that just gets in the way of killin' some more baddies but does do us the favor of breaking up the monotony of the 5-hit combo. The announcer voices are entertaining, and the chick over the radio has a pleasant voice too, but Jax's voice overs are corny and barely passable. The music isn't anything too memorable, the graphics are actually a nice par for the playstation 1, and the storyline is totally uninvolving- until the end where it starts to get interesting for about 1 level. My biggest complaint with this game is that it is too short. I don't remember how long it took me to beat this game, but I would guess it was in the 4-6 hour range. After buying and taking it home THAT DAY, one could guess I was a little dissapointed in my ten dollar investment. This game is fun, but hey, it's a game, if it's not fun it should be burned at the stake for having magical witch powers of evil that can somehow make a game unfun. Personally I wouldn't recommend buying the game unless you were just bored and wanted to try something new, or there really wasn't anything else to buy at the time.

Surprisingly good attempt to expand the Mortal Kombat universe. Fighting and exploring is a lot of fun - the combos are a standout for games of this sort - and the special effects are awesome. Story is a bit weak, as are the really cheesy FMV's, but the fighting and weapons more than make up for it. An improvement by a long shot over the appalling Sub-Zero entry. Well worth the $20 price tag.

I've been a Mortal Kombat fan for many years now. I'm always excited about new Mortal Kombat releases. However, this game really disappoints. The gameplay is just too simple and the story lacks depth. Believe me save your money for something better. Subzero mythologies was way better.

After the hated Mortal Kombat Annihilation which I can have fun with it's a guilty pleasure & it follows The Mortal Kombat 3 storyline to a small extent they changed too much made characters like Jade in name only & added fan fiction. Now movies based on video games about all of them just suc k. Ok a movie won't hurt the games but you had other stuff going on like the cartoon on USA network Defenders Of The Relm that doesn't hold it's not even a guilty pleasure. I remember they had Conquest which that was garbage I can't even remember it. What about the games well Mortal Kombat 4 did good in the arcades & was released on N 64 PS1 in summer 98 it really didn't do the business that Midway or The Mortal Kombat Team wanted. John Tobias who was the writer for The Mortal Kombat games around 1997 wanted to do these character driven adventure games which means prequels which I'm sorry I don't like prequels. I didn't like these adventure games I haven't ever played Monks or whatever although I've heard good things about it. In 1997 Mortal Kombat Mytholgies was released & it's a giant clunker bad controlls couldn't make your jumps you couldn't pull off your moves just an extremely bad game. Mortal Kombat Special Forces was released in 2000. John Tobias wasn't happy where the franchise was going I guess Ed Boon wanted Mortal Kombat to get with the times. John Tobias wanted to make his adventure games he left right in the middle of production of this game. John Tobias took part of the MK Team with him. Ed Boon went ahead rushed it got John Vogel to write the rest & what we got was a terrible train wreck mess of game. It deals with Jax & Sonya who are after Kano. I'm going off of memory when I played this game like 8 or 9 years ago. You play as Jax & well you get terrible controlls you can't turn around when your getting attacked from behind so you get pwnd. I remember you had solve password to get in buildings & I could never get them to work that's all I remember oh & my as s got burned to he ll by a boss. I didn't complete this game it was that awful. That's what all I can remember if anybody out there want's to send me this game as gift that's fine I can give a better review but I wouldn't play it right away. But Mortal Kombat gets back on track when evil comes in 2.

After playing the horrible MKM Subzero, I thought this would be another bomb.. I gave it a chance because of the low price < You play as Jax and are able to do all of his signature moves plus many new combos that are earned thru experience points. There are also many weapons to use. Overall I think its worth picking up. I think Midway learned their lesson after MKM Subzero.

Definitely the worst game of the MK series. This one is not worth even this low price. Save your time and money and play a real game like Metal Gear instead. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer, MKM was a masterpiece compared to this.
