I'm going to try and keep the review spoiler free as best as possible, but there are a few points that'll spoil some "cameos." Mortal Kombat X follows in the footsteps of MK9. Once again Netherrealm studios shows that a fighting game can have an interesting story to go along with just the matches. The story mode itself took me 3-4 hours to play through once. Some parts of the stry are a little cheesy but nothing too terrible overall. I do feel the MK9 story line was a bit longer and MKX left a lot of questions unanswered.

If you liked the MK9 fighting style this one is not that much different. The most noticeable difference is the addition of the three fighting styles which will allow for some more customization to the player's playing style. Cool addition in my view. I still haven't played tower battles yet but that is coming soon. Characters have 3 fatalities and I believe 6 brutalities each, additionally there are faction kills which are specific fatalities to each faction. I believe there are five of these in total. While not as fancy as the individual characters fatalities they are really easy to pull off. I can only speak for the Lin Kuei faction kills at this point. They are just ok but an unexpected addition.

Now for the questionable choices in this game (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!)

The roster includes 25 characters plus Goro for those who preordered. During the story missions however you battle characters that are not playable. This wouldn't be an issue as there have always been a few characters that you couldn't play as that you fought (e.g. Shang Tsung and Goro in MK1, Kintaro and Shao Kahn in MK2, etc.).

In an age where hyperviolence is the norm, is Mortal Kombat still relevant?

That's a question I find myself asking when I look at the copious amount of brutality that takes place in Mortal Kombat X. Whether you're taking in a cutscene, fighting in a match, or finishing off other players, there's all sorts of nastiness on display here. Yet, can the franchise continue to subsist on shock value alone? The days where Ed Boon and his partners in crime were the undisputed lords of gory games have long since passed, meaning that the newest entry in the franchise is, ultimately, just another gory game in a market full of them. That means that Mortal Kombat X needs to offer more than blood, guts and fan service in order to survive.

I'm happy to say that, for the most part, the ever-changing franchise manages to pull it off. Unlike the franchise in its infancy, as well as many of the entries in the early 2000's, gore is no longer the selling point. Yes, it's there, and it's just as extreme and unrealistic and laughable as ever. But you can get the brutal X-Ray shots in a Sniper Elite game, or the heinous violence in any of the numerous God of War titles. If that's the case, what is it, exactly, that Mortal Kombat X brings to the table that makes it a worthwhile purchase? Simple: sheer mechanical perfection.

It may come as a surprise, considering this is a series that's never been about in-depth combat. Up until Deadly Alliance, virtually every character played the same outside of specials and fatalities, and even then, a lot of them still bled together... erm, pardon the expression.

Absolute bullis***, that A-title gaming has started micro purchases in their games even after you pay between $60 and $100 dollars. It was horrible enough that the developers started offering game content (that they developed for the game, prior to release; i.e. GORO in this MK) as pre order only additions to the game, now they decided to turn into the U.S. government and start making you pay every time you want a feature that you already paid for (cable, satellite, now internet, cellphones, ext.)!!! I'll wait for this until it hits the bargain bin with ALL the content in a GOTY edition (that WILL be inevitable, so they can suck every last drop out of the gamers), because I refuse to reward horrible behavior, because if we let this become the status quo, we'll be paying for this type of abusive marketing scheme from now on.

best mortal kombat ever! I can play this all day learning the combos and fatalities. My only issue is why do you have to buy the new characters? What ever happened to the good old days where you unlock them by beating the game with all the playable characters or completing a quest mode. Now everything is like the whack app games where they sucker everyone in for in game purchases. If they must make extra money off of us why not make the characters cheaper or the game cheaper rather than both expensive and we're spending 70-80 dollars a game now.
Sorry had to vent
The story line is stupid sick! Loved every second of it... Unlocking things from the crypt is kinda cool but thats where they should put the characters to unlock! lol Anyway 5 stars super fun and incredible graphics! im so surprised i caught on to this game so late! haha If your thinking oh no not another mortal kombat game this is def not that... this is like wow make another game please! with more stage interaction!
