Good And Bad,

It seems the more you read people talking about this game they either love it or hate it. I fall in the middle. I am just a casual gamer I play every now and then at night or on weekends, but I don't spend every waking moment with a controller in my hands. So take that into consideration as I make this review.
Overall I think this a fun game. I have been playing Mortal Kombat games for a long time now and I find this one just as enjoyable. I think the mix of character is nice with some of your most popular MK characters with some of the most recognizable DC comics heroes and villains. The gameplay has been tweaked a bit since the previous MK game, but it is nothing that you can't adjust to, and overall I think it offers more character control. The special moves or super moves as called in the game are a fun mix too with most of your favorite moves form you MK characters kept in with a mix of a few new ones to keep things interesting. We do have a return of the preprogrammed fatalities, but they have been toned down. No more dismemberment, decapitation, or removal of vital organs. This may be a big deal for you, but I don't require a high level of gore to enjoy a video game. As far as I can tell there are no hidden characters in the game, other then the unlockable boss characters. So don't expect to find Reptile or the Martian Manhunter. But like most Xbox 360 games the game will support downloadable content in the future. But when new fighters show up is up to the video game publisher. If you are trying to chose between the kollectors edition and the basica game save your money. The comic book that comes with the game is a quite small and almost just like a pamphlet and does not really add anything to the story. There is a small poster and a making of dvd. but you will probably be able to see all those videos on youtube before too long. So a hardcore mortal kombat fan or gamer may not enjoy this game too much as it comes up short on gore and hidden characters. But the game still presents and interesting storyline and a chance to play as some of your favorite DC comics characters. I have it I enjoy playing it and hope to have fun with friends playing as superheros and undead ninjas.

Despite reading a lot of negative previews and thoughts from game magazines and Mortal Kombat fans, I was very interested in this game and decided to buy it anyway. I am not a big comic book reader, but I like superhero games, movies, and the characters themselves. That is the main reason I wanted this game. I used to be a big Mortal Kombat fan as well, so everything together made me want to get this. Anyway, I think it is great. It is a ton of fun. The graphics in the characters and arenas are amazing, very clean looking. The gameplay is fun. I kinda suck at it, a little rusty in fighting games, but it is still a lot of fun. The fatalities may be a little watered down, but I think they are still awesome. Sub Zero will freeze an opponent, and then pounds him into hundreds of pieces. It's good stuff. My favorite character so far is Green Lantern. The free fall fighting and klose kombat features are fun, a little difficult, but fun. i haven't tackled the story mode yet, but will be starting that tonight. All in all, this game is exactly what I wanted: A great looking "pick up and play" game for when friends come over, that is fun, has awesome characters, and can be played forever. Pick it up if you like good fighting games or are a fan of either franchise.

Great storyline to tie in the two universes and explaining how the heck some of these overated powerful heroes could be balanced out to make this a decent fighting game. Personally I could've thought of a better selection of DC heroes that would've fit more into the Mortal Kombat world but overall they did a surprisngly great job for the selection of DC cast that was chosen.I had to change my block button to LT for better response time for me to block but other than that, all was good. A great fighting game for the holidays with minus the weapons from previous MK games but great gameplay and good to see the MK cast finally crossover to the next generation systems. Which I think was long overdue. This is a keeper for fighting fans!

I haven't been a fan of MK since after MK II for the Arcades and Super NES. I've tried all the sequels but they just weren't for me, especially the last 4 for the PlayStation and PS2.
MK vs. DC brings this series back to it's roots and it's a lot of fun. The fatalities can be lame but they still do what they're supposed to - give you closure to a hard fought victory. The fighting engine is a little stiff but it doesn't hinder the game play and you get used to it relatively quickly. Besides, I found it more enjoyable that Soul Calibur 4. Bottom lins is that the game is fun. I received it today and played through the arcade mode with Scorpion and I can't wait to play through it with the other 19 characters. I hope Midway keeps this engine and fine tunes it for future MK releases. Here's also hoping that the next one is a mature game too. I like the DC characters though and this is a nice one-off game.

If you have been less than pleased with the most recent iterations of the MK franchise and would like a return to a more MK3ish kombat system (lol) then then this is the game for you. It does away with a lot of the silly and complex and memorization heavy aspects of the later MK games (stances and long and hard to memorize combos) and replaces it with more timing based skills. The game is a lot faster paced and is fun to play. It's rated T for teen, so don't be expecting a hundred rib cages to be busting out of anyone's torsos during the fatalities.

Ok, first off I haven't played MK since Deception came out for ps2 and that was a great game with the unique styles and combos, very fun. So i was pretty excited to hear about DC vs MK... Come on now FLASH! For real! I could picture myself running circles landing blows at the speed of light! But that didn't happen this game and for good and understandable reasons.
But moving on, this is a great game to add to your fighting collection. It's always good to pop in when company arrives. And the online is a GREAT addition that keeps me wanting to play more. So I'll just sum up this this review with a couple pros and cons... Pros: -Great Visuals -Great Sound -Very Entertaining -Fun to play online or with friends -Love some of the characters: Joker, funny to fight against. Flash, dont mind losing to him. I personally use Captain Marvel. -Once again, great job on the character and there combos. Batman looks great when he's beating you to a pulp. Cons: -Story mode: **womp, womp** blah, blah, blah RAGE!!! Argh! blah, blah -NO MINI-GAMES??? come on! -***BIGGEST CON**** Character selection: Yes some are very nice choices such as of course, superman, batman, joker, green latern, and even captain marvel and others are ? Death who? where's cyrax, hell.. Mr. freeze or ooooh Martian Manhunter? What happended to my go to guy Kung Lao?? IM AT A DISADVANTAGE HERE!! Please just give me Kung Lao!!! -The hit detection for the online can get irrating especially when you know you hit the person with an uppercut and that was the winning uppercut but do to some magical glitch it went right through him :/ But all in all, it's a very good game. I payed 60 bucks for it and I don't regret it at all. I just hope that microsoft will be updating some worthy characters!!! Hint, Hint KUNG LAO!!!!!!!!

MK v. DC Universe: A Real Let-down,
By

MK v. DC was a real disappointment from the start. 4 friends and I readied ourselves for battle with much anticipation only to find just a handful of characters on either side, some of which being poor choices when compared to other possibilities. I have no idea why they chose to include a largely irrelevant character like Deathstroke and failed to include Reptile. The game also fails do justice by some of the characters that it does include such as, Shang Tsung, who no longer possesses the ability to morph into other characters.
The storyline is very week and almost non-existent, especially when compared to previous MK games and the comics and movies surrounding DC. I would compare the depth of the game to the original sega/snes library. It is missing the storylines, konquest modes, and mini games that we have grown accustom to in the MK series. I feel the game also is missing the visually and environmentally dark edge that other MK games have and that was displayed in the advertisements for this game. This is probably the result of appeasing DC but I do not think it would alienate many fans, especially those exposed to the comics and the recent movies. I feel this game may have been geared for too wide an audience and may be why it is so watered down. This is a great concept and not a horrible beginning but they should have gave us much more. Hopefully they will do a sequel or a MK and Marvel version that will address the above issues and add some of the critical MK game play we have grown to love such as, expanded special moves, multiple stances, and weapons. I suggest you rent before you buy.

By far the best game ever. Call me crazy, but I enjoy this more then the new MK.
I've been playing MK since the arcades. After seeing the fatalities, I was hooked. Then i owned it for SNES, and then for ps1, and for ps2. I especially like UMK 3. If parents are worried about violence, then the problem is solved. Not only are the violence tuned down, you can even turn off blood, which is found in options. OK. the game carries 20 characters (I think, LOL.) I'll list all I remember MORTAL KOMBAT (my fav) sub zero scorpion kitana sonya kano jax liu kang raiden baraka shang tsung DC flash batman superman flash deathstroke wonder woman cat woman green lantern joker capt. marvel <--- lmfao omg i was right :D and prolly more to unlock :3 it has plenty features that will keep you having fun for endless hours. unlike the new MK, which is only classic 1 on 1 fighting till one dies. no wall bashing, no air combat... in this game, if you use the right combination, you can knock off your enemy off a low wall, and then punch/kick the enemy in mid air. then after that, use your special attack, adn you can turn em' into ice, and smash em to the ground. or, you shoot a roped spear to your enemy's chest, then ank em to the ground. and many more. or, if you use the right combination, you can kick/punch someone thru a wall, then push them through 5+ walls. controls: good, easy to learn, respond well. 5/5 graphics: crystal clear, good. 5/5 gameplay: fun. 5/5 replay value: very good. 5.5/5 :D overall: get this game. NOW. _______NOTE FOR FANS AND PARENTS________ FANS: if you like this game only because of violence, then don't get it. sub zeros' fatality isnt spine rip, its simple turning someone into ice, then breaking them. no blood. scorpion's stays the same. spitting fire. kano doesnt heart rip. there's no gore at all. PARENTS: this game does not contain gore. the fatalities (a move to finish off your enemy) is NOT bloody. or gory. so don't go thinking organ ripping, decaptipating, or anything like that. if you have enough and your kid wants it, get it.

When Midway first unveiled Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe, I thought it was an elaborate joke. Turns out the joke was on me, as the game quickly shaped up to be something quite different indeed, as familiar faces from Midway's massively sucessful Mortal Kombat series unite with superheroes and supervillains from the pages of DC comic books. The end result is pretty much a standard Mortal Kombat game, but that isn't such a bad thing, and as a whole, Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe is a blast. On the Mortal Kombat side of things are fan favorite fighters like Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Shao Khan, Baraka, Sonya, Kitana, Jax, and Kano; while the DC side offers up Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Lex Luthor, The Joker, Darkseid, Catwoman, Captain Marvel, and Deathstroke. Seeing all these characters together in one game is brought to you by a goofy story from comic writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, but what's really surprising is how good the DC characters manage to mesh in with the MK universe. The fighting system is rock solid, the game looks and flows spectecularly to boot, even if the violence level has been noticeably (and expectedly) toned down. There's smooth online play as well, which is a big time plus as well. All in all, Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe isn't without its flaws, but the game is a sheer blast regardless, and is definitely well worth your time.

I guess I fall into the same category as some of the other reviewers. I'm a casual gamer who'll play for a couple of hours on the weekend. I've always enjoyed the arcade versions of MK, but this is the first one that I've ever actually owned.
I guess I never really realized what it was that drew me to MK in the first place. After playing this game for a little while, I realize it was apparently the violence, which is definitely lacking in this version. I'm assuming it was done to appease DC, but its just not the same. Normal fighting has a certain amount of blood, but the fatalities really suffer. Granted, I haven't done any myself, but after a quick YouTube search, I was severely disappointed. They look just like regular attacks and don't have the dismemberment/disemboweling element that was pretty readily available in previous versions. As sick as it sounds, that's what made the previous versions really fun. Another thing I feel is lacking is overall difficulty. Alot of the special moves seem overly simplistic and can really be accomplished by a similar combination of buttons across all characters. There seems to be an unnecessary focus on these much-discussed "pro moves" and "super moves" which really aren't any more special than combinations of normal and special moves. After trying a few in the Kombo Challenge mode, I found myself asking "Ok, so I just did 4 moves I already knew in a row, so what? It was overly difficult to execute and didn't give me any kind of a new move as far as a visual goes" Story mode is, as others have stated, a cheesy joke and on the default medium difficulty, I had arcade mode beat in the first night. I guess I was just expecting more. Another minor annoyance is the new "Test You Might," falling combat, and close combat modes (whatever they're called). Maybe I should have read the manual but I just don't get it. I enter this mode and end up mashing buttons without any comprehension of what it does and I really can't figure out any kind of strategy rhyme or reason to it. Don't get me wrong, though. The game is fun. Its really entertaining to play as the DC characters, even with my first reaction to some of the characters (Captain Marvel? Deathstroke? Who?). The graphics are very impressive. The characters all look great and settings are beautiful. Story mode is a little iffy in this category but its not too terrible. As annoying as the falling combat feature is, it is kind of cool to have that much interactivity with the scene. The combos (although easy and noticeably nonviolent) are pretty visual interesting for both MK and DC characters. I guess I just expected more from the first MK on 360. Although the partnership with DC was a cool idea in concept, it seems to have hindered the overall experience of the game itself. Too much energy was put into those pro/super moves and alternate fighting modes and other areas suffer. Its fun to play, but I can't help but feel a little dissapointed. |
