5.0 out of 5 stars An memorable mix of surf/no-wave/doo-wop
I purchased this cd upon hearing the first track "ice cream sundae". It immeidiately grabbed me with it's taut sonic youthish guitar line. The rest of the album reminded me of black sabbath (there is a cover...hint hint) mixed with jefferson airplane (some of the vocals sound like they were inspired by Grace Slick) done in a minimal but effective way. Most of the album has a foreboding feeling of doom to it that is temporary aleviated with the two sunny girl group covers which are excellently performed. The two distinct female vocalists that take turns at the microphone are largely responsible for this chilly ambience that envelopes your ears. Definitely an overlooked gem of an album. If you're into uncompromising punk bands with original sounds such as sonic youth, fugazi and unwound definitely check this album out, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Spooky., July 17, 2010
This review is from: Mortal Mirror (Audio CD)
My husband is a big Slant 6 and Autoclave fan. I'm... not. On either account. But that's how I discovered this band, and I'm glad... because I really dig it.

Billote's voice reminds me of the singer from Jefferson Airplane (another reviewer on here has said the same, I am backing that up now). Her voice really drives the whole album, and it's definitely up there as one of the best examples of female punk vocals of all time (in my humble opinion). There is a very dark, brooding, lonely mood to this whole album... but that is spiked with a few cheery tunes as well. A lot of heavy, acoustic, thumping bass paired with spooky lyrics. The album is very original, not your typical collection from this era of music. A few covers, a few 50's inspired tunes, a few instrumentals that would be perfect for a Halloween party (absolutely no exaggeration), and some grungy tunes reminiscent of Sonic Youth.

Enjoy this album if you are a fan of girl groups, bass, Wednesday Addams, early punk, ETC.

I believe this is Quix*o*tic's 2nd cd, it's unlike anything i've ever heard before. It has a very mellow vibe and a very original sound, it's hard to describe unless you hear it. They've got 3 covers on it: tell it like it is, lord of this world (really cool version too!) and sitting in the park. Overall, quix*o*tic is definitely something worth hearing if you can get into it. On another note, it was mixed by Guy Piccioto of Fugazi, they've done some shows together I think. I hope you like it!
