3.0 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, April 24, 2001
This review is from: Mortal gods: A novel (Hardcover)
I read this book in the leather-bound "Masterpieces of Science Fiction" series published by Easton Press. I'm not sure how it was ever selected for this series, because it's a rather mediocre book.

The book is a fairly light read, with a rollicking adventure plot. The story is set several hundred years in the future, where genetic engineering (to extremes) is commonplace. The story's roots in the 70's are clear, as recreational drug use and casual sex are also everyday aspects of this future society. The explicit language and sex scenes also seem to date the book in the same manner.

Some subtexts about racism/bigotry and shallow social values keep the book from being fluff, but they're quite transparent and not very challenging.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but not nearly worth the honor of being on the Science Fiction Writers' Associations' Top 100 list, or being leather-bound by the Easton Press. Perhaps it broke some literary ground that I'm not aware of, but as a novel it's only mildly entertaining.
