5.0 out of 5 stars like the first christian death metal!
of course this is an essential buy. I mean with out these guys would there be a Living Sacrifice, Crimson Thorn, Extol, Sympathy, or Disencumbrance? I think not. Scrolls of the Megilloth is my personal fav. from good ol mortification. this is a must have. may not be the heaviest, nor the most technical, but it is important and it is essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this really considered to be Music?
Oh! Come on! This is pure noise. Is as bad as listening to Rap, Hip-Hop which are too considered to be music.
What happened to good old Rock and Roll? Those people had skills, voices and talent.
I can scream just like that and sing about things that nobody will ever understand unless the lyrics are read.
PLEASE! Don't waste your hard earned dollar, buy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Metal's Finest, July 17, 2004
This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
Many people dismiss this band because of their belief in God,but they are missing out on some excellent metal.

Self titled review-This is known as death metal, but it is really more like brutal thrash with death vocals. The guitar tone is grinding, and similar to Celtic Frost's on their older albums, which is obviously a compliment. It's hard to put this album into words, other than BRUTAL,reminiscent of the harshest Slayer and Celtic Frost. The songwriting is very memorable, and each song has it's own identity.Steve Rowe's vocals take a little getting used to if you aren't accustomed to death metal, but if you are then you will be right at home here.Mortification is one of the few Christian metal releases that is equal,if not better than the secular competition.

Scrolls Of The Megilloth review-Mortification takes a straight up death metal sound on here.Scrolls incorporates more blastbeats to the Mortification sound, and pushes the brutality to another level. The guitar riffs are very brutal and melodic at the same time. The tempo also gets changed up quite a bit, which helps things from getting to be too monotonous.Drum wise,Scrolls is incredible, and will make you drop your jaw at the speed of the blastbeats.Several atmospheric interludes also provide a break from the sonic destruction, and give Scrolls a distinct identity. My only problem with this album is the production. The kick drums are way too clicky, which gets annoying very fast. Also, the guitars sound thin on here, which is disappointing to say the least.Otherwise, this is a mandatory album regardless of your religious beliefs.

For once a christian band can stand on equal ground with any band, period. Most christian music is subpar to say the least, and cannot even compare to their secular counterparts.Mortification are the exception to the rule, and deserve a lot of respect for making killer music than any metal fan should appreciate. Two great albums for the price of one make this an essential purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oyez, oyez...metal, April 25, 2000
This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
You can't go wrong with this one! Thanks to KMG, the days of paying astronomical prices for these classic Christian death metal albums are over. This is what Mortification will be remembered for. Before they fronted a more speed/power style of metal, Mortification was 100%, ten thousand miles an hour, super heavy death. Steve's vocals are super low and growly, while the drumming is absolutley off the wall. The doulbe kicks will rattle your brain to its core. Death metal can't get much better than this. With flawless production, two albums wrapped into one CD and thought provoking lyrics, you can't go wrong with old school Mortification. Listen and smile!

El Kabong gives it four head bangs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing death metal, March 12, 2002
This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
I got this on tape many years ago when it first came out (Scrolls...). It blew me away. Still does. Most of the guitar and bass work are fairly simplistic, but it ROCKS HARD, and is brutal. Brutal kinda gets overused anymore, but Scrolls IS brutal.

It starts out kinda mellow (intro) then kicks you in the head until the CD is over. Funny thing is I didn't know these guys were Christian until I started reading the lyrics. Cool. Steve Rowe hasn't ever topped Scrolls, and kinda changed musical direction after this CD came out. They got a little mellower and kinda went into more of a 'speed metal' direction.

If you like HEAVY music (with a positive message for a change) this is hard to top.

5.0 out of 5 stars Srolls reissue through www.soundmass.com, March 4, 2005

megade01 (Perth, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
I just picked up the reissue of Scrolls of the Megilloth made available in December 04 through Soundmass dot com in Australia. I never heard this album before because it was impossible to get new or second hand for many years, but I had heard so many good things written and said about it.

The album is incredibly good throughout. It is straight out death metal. The classic line up of Jayson Sherlock (drums), Michael Carlisle (guitars) and Steve Rowe (bass/vocals) appears here. All the essential death metal ingredients are here, the genuine growled vocals, super fast, perfectly timed, crisp, clean drumming a la Obituary, and the many musical variations and speed changes that keep the record from being boring and hold your attention. Because Sherlock and Carlisle write most of the lyrics they are better and more complex and philosophical than on later Mort releases where the lyrics tend to be simple evangelistic messages.

I would have to say this is a very technical record. I have been listening to Obituary's classic The End Complete, also originally released in 1992, the same year as Scolls, and Scrolls certainly stands up well against it.

Favorite tracks are Terminate Damnation, Eternal Lamentation, Inflamed, Lymphosarcoma and the title track. It is awesome to hear Steve Rowe's faith and conviction when he growls "Lymphosarcoma, Never to Return" over and over, and his faith is inspiring. Lympho whatever is a cancer that one of his friends had and overcame.

The pompous spoken voice effect of the vicar at the funeral scene in Death Requiem also makes its point very effectively, and it is very funny to listen to. It provides much needed light relief and diversion after a slate of very serious songs.

The passion, power and conviction of Mortification is all here, and it is a very worthwhile purchase. The December 2004 re-issue is available through Soundmass dot com. The re-issue contains four bonus tracks, original cover art, full lyrics and band photos.

FOOTNOTE ADDED 27 NOVEMBER 2011:
There is also a 2011 Metal Mind reissue with three songs as bonus tracks (but no rare unreleased studio or live bonus tracks unfortunately). Sound quality on the Metal Mind version is much superior to the Soundmass version. The Metal Mind version contains new band history information and full song lyrics. However, the band history information is identical on all of the Metal Mind Mortification reissues. Best bonus tracks are probably on the "Blood World" reissue.

5.0 out of 5 stars whippeeee!!!!!!Death metal and stuff!!!!!!, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
First let us look at S/T.This is a pretty good cd, though it is not death metal, just brutal thrash.Of course that isn't too bad because when you start out in metal with only afew cds.My only problem is the drumming and that the cd is pretty short(only 38 minutes).Plus, the cover is pretty sick. Now let's talk about disk two,the real reason to buy this set.Scrolls is avery good death metal album for a couple of reasons:firt, the this is one of the first christian death metal albums, and second this is great music.I can't think of one bad song, and the last song is over eleven brutal minutes!I would like to get the special edetion of this cd that came out last year.Later this year,Mortification is coming out with heir new cd and it is supposed to be returning to death metal. Can't wait!I recommend this to anyone who has good taste for music.Oh,by the way, Becoming The Archetype named their first album after the song Terminate Damnation from Scrolls.Pretty sweet, huh? Also go check out BTA too. You'll like them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoah!!!, April 27, 2004

This review is from: Mortification: Scrolls of the Megaloth (Audio CD)
Mortification's first disc is good, but really get this for Scrolls of the Megilloth. They'll never be able to top this. From the opening track I could tell that this album was a winner. The album that is hailed by many as Mortification's best effort. Many of today's Christian bands were inspired by this, some even using the song titles as a name for their band. This disc, unlike the self titled, is death metal. The blast beats abound! Heavy, downtuned, fast, chaotic, technical...just an all over good release. The lyrics matured quite a bit on this release as well, still bring forth their belief in Jesus Christ, but in a much more interesting way. Songs like "Scrolls of the Megilloth" are actually straight up Bible teachings. Others like "Nocturnal" were an attempt to show disapproving Christians why they do what they do. The production was beefy and blew away their self titled album.
