Book Description

Severn House Large Print February 1, 2004
When Charity is offered a post as governess in the Trevelyan household, she sees it as a welcome escape from her dreary life as the adopted daughter of the Reverend Palfrey. But her first sighting of Morwennan House fills her with an inexplicable sense of foreboding, and her fear is compounded by her first encounter with Francis Trevelyan and his strange sister Selena. Yet her charge, little motherless Charlotte, is an enchanting child who responds to Charity's affectionate nature, and there is Tom Stanton, a business colleague of Francis', whose good looks and honest charm awaken Charity's romantic interest. Soon, though, Charity realises that Morwennan is the headquarters of a dangerous smuggling operation, and a series of disturbing incidents add to her growing conviction that there are other, darker secrets lurking beneath the surface.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Not many gothics get published these days, especially well-written ones, so it's a pleasure to read Tanner's. Set on the rugged Cornish coast circa 1800, it begins as a first-person reminiscence by Charity Palfrey. A foundling raised by the rector and his wife, Charity becomes a governess and is soon infatuated with Tom Stanton, a man she comes to believe is a wrecker--a smuggler who lures incoming ships to the rocky shores, where they crash, making their cargoes ripe for the picking. As her heart wars with her mind, it becomes apparent that danger lurks around every corner. Moving effortlessly between flashbacks, the present, and different points of view, Tanner is immensely skillful in her portrayal of a brave heroine in search of her roots, a courageous hero bent on justice and revenge, and a cast of evildoers who fill the pages with adventure and suspense. Recommend Tanner to patrons who say they haven't read a decent gothic since Victoria Holt or Mary Stewart. Shelley Mosley
