5.0 out of 5 stars Ranks right up there with chocolate!
It's eye candy! Wonderful layout! The book starts out with a brief introduction by the author and an explanation of how to use this terrific little book, (6.75" X 8") though 249 pages of cover-to-cover inspiration is no little thing. 2.0 out of 5 stars Limited and disappointing, perhaps mislabled as a "bible" for artists
A mosaic artist's "bible" should cover, or at least refer to, all things mosaic. I found this to be more of a craft-oriented, paint-by-numbers book of patterns, not geared to artists. I suppose the patterns may be helpful for those who do not create their own designs but if that's not what you're after, this book not only doesn't offer anything new, it doesn't even touch...

It's eye candy! Wonderful layout! The book starts out with a brief introduction by the author and an explanation of how to use this terrific little book, (6.75" X 8") though 249 pages of cover-to-cover inspiration is no little thing. The next section entitled "Inspirations" is a gallery of original works by various mosaic artists, followed by Materials and Tools, then techniques (which covers color selection, design and application.) Finally, 190 pages of patterns! What I like best about the page layout in the pattern section is that each pattern (shown as a scale drawing) includes a PHOTOGRAPH of an actual mosaic, rather than just a colored line drawing. In addition, along with the scale drawing and photo are a suggested color palette, a key indicating level of difficulty, plus lots of notes offering ideas for combinations and directions for working the design (such as starting points and direction.) The patterns range from very simple to involved. There's a section dealing with the alphabet and numbers that shows one style letter, upper and lower case, but each letter is done in a different tiled design. This book is worth every penny. If I had to offer a negative, I would say that it, like too many of the mosaic books, doesn't go into outdoor application deep enough. I would really like to find a book that addresses that issue thoroughly. But then, this is primarily a pattern book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Mosaic Artist's Bible, February 3, 2007
This review is from: The Mosaic Artist's Bible: 300 Traditional & Contemporary Designs (Spiral-bound)
A good buy definitely worth the money. A must have for anyone serious about pursuing this art. It gives details of scale drawings for all projects and a color palette which are helpful. However,it doesn't give an estimate of the number of tiles or the best type of tiles needed for each project.

A mosaic artist's "bible" should cover, or at least refer to, all things mosaic. I found this to be more of a craft-oriented, paint-by-numbers book of patterns, not geared to artists. I suppose the patterns may be helpful for those who do not create their own designs but if that's not what you're after, this book not only doesn't offer anything new, it doesn't even touch on many of the most important mosaic materials and techniques, so the title is very misleading. This book never once refers to smalti, the most basic and historic of tesserae, not does it discuss any artistic techniques, such as visual flow(andemento) or outlining. The words "bible" and "artist's" should not be in the title, maybe more "how-to" for beginners.

This is perfect for quick technique. It has practical design that can be imitated or exaggerated into fine art. Letters and numbers are made creatively. Plenty of ideas that will be a great help. Mine is full of sticky notes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's resource., December 23, 2007
This review is from: The Mosaic Artist's Bible: 300 Traditional & Contemporary Designs (Spiral-bound)
My first impression was less than excited, but the more I look at it, the more I see that it can serve as either a jump start for inspiration, or information for technical applications. Can also serve to show a client some possibilities or how something might look upon completion for simple jobs, like address plaques. Nothing, or very little, in the way of pebble or marble or smalti mosaics, but big on glass, which is okay, but leaves the title a somewhat misleading. And nothing on framing, mounting or hanging.

Excellent book on mosaics for both beginners and advanced crafters. Contains a great selection of designs ranging from simple to more complex. Also includes a well constructed technical section. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a mosaic book at their fingertips that has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to get educated AND inspired!, September 19, 2008
This review is from: The Mosaic Artist's Bible: 300 Traditional & Contemporary Designs (Spiral-bound)
Absolutely LOVE this resource. Teaches you how to do mosaic, (different types of tiles, grouts, glues, tools, surfaces, techniques, color theory etc.) and then provides tons of design inspiration so you can start creating.
Spiral bound - lays or stands flat, so you can reference it while working.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL designs of all types, with instructions for how to do each one yourself if you want to copy, - or - plenty of inspiration for creating your own designs!
What I love most is that, through using different photos of different pieces, they show you so many different styles of mosaic design. Different ways of placing the tiles - and how that affects the design. The photos themselves are teaching tools.

It's true that it uses mainly glass, but it does inform you about different types of materials. If you are creative in the first place, you can look at the photos and imagine different types of materials anyway. You don't really need your hand held.
AWESOME resource. It's the only mosaic book I've ever owned.
