5.0 out of 5 stars worth buying alone just for the Ustvolskaya, July 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mosaic / Concerto for Piano & String Orchestra (Audio CD)
but the Pelecis and Gorecki pieces are interesting also. I have about 4 different recordings of the Gubaidulina which speaks for itself, so no comment needed. The Ustvolskaya is harrowing and beautiful, composed in the 40's and one can feel Shostakovich's influence on her music clearly here. Much, much different then her other cerebral works and more firmly lodged in "classical" notions.
The Gorecki is pretty interesting, but the surprise was the Pelecis, whom I had never heard of. A bizarre work, plinky and high-spirited, yet sounds serialist to me. Hope to see more of his music recorded...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pelecis, January 17, 2010
This review is from: Mosaic / Concerto for Piano & String Orchestra (Audio CD)
The piece by Pelecis is a very simple modern-classical piece that never outstays its welcome, due to being quite short. I've had people say that it sounds like film music, but that is completely unfair since film music is never as catchy or memorable as this piece. The three movements of Concertino Bianco are each based around very simple figures that build over 4 or 5 minutes; the third movement is very lively in a Beethovian kind of way but without the complexity or brooding temperament; kind of a minimalist-neo-classicist for modern times. Wonderful.

Unfortunately i do not own the CD so cannot comment on the rest of the music, but when I can afford it, I will be buying this CD for Pelecis alone!
