Biography

Fourteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of
awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has ... Read more in Amazon's Ricky Skaggs Store

Editorial Reviews

2010 release from the veteran Country/Bluegrass superstar. When inspiration infuses with genius, an extraordinary creation occurs. For 14-time Grammy-winning artist Ricky Skaggs, that creation is the right sound and the right people involved to 'make the music that is in his head and in his heart.' This most special album, Mosaic, hooks the heart, as the sounds invite you in to take notice and come closer. Ricky, now celebrating his 50th anniversary in music, crowns this special year with Mosaic. 50 years in the making, this album weaves pieces of life, remembrances, and thoughtful wisdom of the ages to create a fresh, new sound for all the people of the world to hear.

If you're a gospel music fan, buy it.

More powerful moments abound with the southern-Gospel-esque "A Work of Love" an ode to the joy of finding life in Christ.

Excellent instrumental composition and lyrics.

Prime Cuts: Can't Shake God, Mosaic, I'm Awake Now

You can't domesticate Ricky Skaggs. Even in his commercial heyday when he was reigning over the country chart with hits such as "Lovin' Only Me," "Same Ol' Love," and "Highway 40 Blues," he always had streaks of bluegrass and Gospel within him. Just when you thought he had country music nailed, he made a 10-album bluegrass excursion establishing himself as a veteran of sorts in the genre. And to the surprise of his bluegrass and country fans, we are now greeted with "Mosaic." Neither neo-traditional country nor bluegrass, "Mosaic" is a contemporary Christian Adult-Contemporary record backed sometimes by a full-bodied string section with an occasional splinter of rustic instrumentation (such as the banjo, hammered dulcimer and uileann pipes). Partly responsible for such a directional niche is the involvement of Gordon Kennedy (who has written songs for Amy Grant, Garth Brooks, Susan Ashton and Eric Clapton) who not only co-produced this set, but co-wrote 13 out of the 14 tracks.

Not one to askew his faith, Ricky Skaggs is first to admit that this record is about God. In the midst of the uncertainties of life, Skaggs offers God as the pentimento of hope on the popish ballad "You'll Find God." Also, enthralling is the title cut "Mosaic" which houses the message that regardless of how insignificant we feel, we still have a place in God's design. More powerful moments abound with the southern-Gospel-esque "A Work of Love" an ode to the joy of finding life in Christ. Punctuated by banjo and piano riffs, "Someday Soon" speaks of the hope we have in Christ's second advent. Less satisfying though is the apocalyptic "Fire from the Sky.

Ricky Skaggs, and his producer have weaved I believe is one of the best gospel albums I've heard in a long time. You can tell from the lyrics, and from the way he sings, that this album was speaking to Ricky Skaggs's heart. For those of you that have followed Skaggs career, you know that he started in Bluegrass music, went to Country music and back to Bluegrass again. He's had success in both genres and has excelled and established himself as a 'star' in both genres. Don't expect the Bluegrass or Country Ricky Skaggs here. He has reinvented himself into a folksy balladeer. Some have called Mosaic, Pop music, but I think it fits more along with Folk music, or rootsy Americana music. Ricky Skaggs has reinvented himself, and made probably his best album ever. Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.

If you love God in Christ
If you love to rejoice in God
If you love to be lifted up to lofty heights through song
If you love Ricky Skaggs and are blown away at his talent:

Then you have the personal obligation to bless yourself and pick this up for the elevating and fortifying of your soul (and others by giving this as a memorable gift).

You'll be filled with joy as you delight in songs such as:

- A Work of Love
- Someday Soon
- Fire from the Sky
- And so much more.

I do not know much about music, but I know what I like; and I love this; inspiring and enriching.

Also try Randy Travis' "I'll Fly Away."

I have virtually all of Ricky's CD's after he returned to Bluegrass and most of the cassettes from his country days. Upon hearing that he was going another gospel album I was excited, but then after hearing that it wasn't Bluegrass I was disappointed. I remember seeing Skaggs being interviewed when Mosaic was being released and he said something like, "It ain't Bluegrass, but it sure is good." I wasn't sure.

I put off buying it because it wasn't bluegrass thinking it wouldn't be much good. I WAS WRONG. Mosaic is a good album with original songs with great instrumentation. My twenty-two year old daughter kept putting the CD player back to the title track she liked it so much and my other daughter said she liked the Return to Sender track (so do I).

If you're s Ricky Skaggs fan, buy it. If you're a gospel music fan, buy it. Good stuff!

.... but someone already said it! ... what a pleasant, no more than pleasant, an inspiring surprise from Ricky Skaggs ... I haven't enjoyed and "felt" music like this is a long while ... not just a couple of stand-out tracks, this is a whole album of songs that have passion and are executed with honest feeling and power ... I'll go ahead and say it: "Wow!" ... now get this album and see if it doesn't cause you to at least smile if not shout "AMEN" a few times yourself ...

All I can say is WOW! Ricky has made a masterpiece here. Along with his producer, songwriter, musician friendship and along with his daughter Molly and a host of guest, Ricky has put together something That will stand the test of time. Ricky give us more of this! I love everything Ricky does from traditional and reworked bluegrass to his country versions of "Honey, Won't You Open That Door" to "Uncle Pen". This entire new cd is a breathe of fresh air. Keep it up Ricky!
