jazz used to sound like noodles to me but this guy turned me onto the music about a year ago. now im about done purchasing his entire musical output and this is some of the most beautiful, intelligent, insidious music ive ever heard. a year ago when i first heard a few tracks from Point of Departure, i didnt really understand everything he was getting at rythmically and melodic/harmonicly, but i knew with every inch of my body that his music was something special. now im digesting his music as i hear it and the sonic structures/sculptures i now hear him creating are of an ineffably wonderful quality. dont hesitate with this guys stuff, just jump in and you'll get used to it soon enough. i look forward to a lifetime of enjoying this guys work.

This 3 disc set may be the finest Andrew Hill edition yet. The outstanding compositions range from hard boppish to introspective for most of the first two discs. The 3rd cd features an excellent mix of freer pieces and some beautiful ballads. The sound is superb throughout, making this set very enjoyable listening. All of the musicians participating in these sessions are the finest practitioners of their art. Bennie Maupin, Sam Rivers, Charles Tolliver, Woody Shaw, Ron Carter, Richard Davis, Paul Motian, Freddie Waits... You get the picture. I have many of the Andrew Hill Blue Note cds, but this Mosaic set is really something special. If you're a Hill fan, or you enjoy superb inside/outside modern jazz then this set comes highly recommended. Shop around for the best price.
