5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of Patton's rare groove albums, December 13, 2006
This review is from: Mosaic Select (Audio CD)
This set is a must to those who love the sound of John patton's blue note sound but firstly let me point out that john Patton is John patton not the legendary Jimmy Smith, Smith has popularised the organ and has developed his own distinct sound and style, Patton might have been influenced by Smith but as I have pointed out above, he was at home when playing and dishing out soulful blues and groovy organ solos as well as when he was backing his sidemen.
The set contains tracks from 5 albums recorded for blue note records which are " Along came John, The way I feel, Oh baby, That certain feeling and Understanding". On all the albums Patton was on top of his game, his playing was fluid with the backing of cats like Harold Vick, Ben Dixon, Grant Green and Blue Mitchell amongst other great artists. The set contains 3 CD's comprising 29 tracks, the quality of the remastered music is superb on almost all the tracks except on 1 or 2 tracks where there are minor glitches which are acknowledged in the infrmation booklet, the information booklet contains essays, discography as well as each album session details, the quality of CD is apparently, materially different from the quality of well established jazz labels, this observation is based on the look and feel of the CD but be that as it may be,I encourage John Patton lovers to buy this CD because it contains some of the the best albums by the artist, its a collector's item

4.0 out of 5 stars Straight Ahead, July 30, 2010

Three disks, short ones. This is straight-ahead organ groove. Nothing sudden or unexpected, just nice and easy. Grant Green, Jimmy Ponder, and others add spice. If you like organ combos and Soul Jazz, you will like it. I give it four stars for not knocking me out, except may once or twice. All Mosaic disks are worth having.
