2.0 out of 5 stars Writing Style
I did not care for the writing style of this book. (Too chatty and conversational.) The "think-aloud" and "questioning" examples sounded forced and patronizing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Literacy Collaborative Teachers, August 29, 2007
This review is from: Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Paperback)
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down and finished it in less than a week. It is chock full of great reading teaching points and literature discussion starters. I definitely plan on using this book while planning this year. My husband laughed at me because I tabbed so many of the pages.
Excellent book on language arts for teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars It'll Make You Think!, June 22, 2008

This review is from: Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Paperback)
During my credential program, I heard and read about think alouds and comprehension strategies, but didn't get to see those in practice in the classroom. I knew they were important, but didn't know how to implement them. This book offered practical advice (for multiple grade levels) that will help me begin to teach these strategies in the fall. The authors describe a clear structure for teaching comprehension, and offer real world narratives of teachers using the strategies. There was a lot to think about in this book, and I'm sure I'll be reading it again!

I am a reading specialist at a K-8 school. I found this to be an excellent resource to put into practice myself and to share with classroom teachers. The writing style makes it easy to read and there are very practical strategies to put to use right away. This should be required reading for every teacher to know how to effectively approach teaching comprehension stategies to their students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good textbook, October 11, 2007

I had to buy this book for one of my literacy graduate courses, and I really am enjoying it. I like the little asides and examples that the author uses, and the narrative format is much easier to follow and understand than "normal" or dry textbooks. The subheadings for the chapters give a fairly nice indication of what each chapter is about, and the book is organized nicely.

Ellin has once again put into words how we can make our classrooms more productive. The book is similiar to the first edition but includes more examples of how to implement. Easy to read and very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful book with great insight, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Paperback)
This is the best book I ever had to read for class. (graduate student) It's informative but interesting. The content is powerful and makes you think. There are plenty of examples given for comprehension, which sparks ideas to how you can apply the strategies to get similar results in your classroom. I am studying to become a literacy specialist and this is one book that I will always keep as a resource. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Inspiring AND Practical Teaching Book!, August 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Paperback)
I've been teaching for 9 years and a fellow teacher mentioned this book, so I bought it. I had been feeling confident about my teaching skills and style, but like I was still missing some of the students. This book single-handedly propelled me to the next level. I was so inspired! Real teachers in real classrooms sharing their real teaching downfalls and triumphs. This book is so easy to relate to that I recommend it to all teachers (except new teachers- might be too much for the first 2-3 years). Looking for a way to truly know what each individual students in your class is doing in reading and writing? Buy this book.
