Bug-Ridden and Almost Useless, February 11, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mosby's Comprehensive EMT-Basic Refresher and Review CD-ROM (CD-ROM)
I purchased this CD as an adjunct to my EMT-B class, in hopes of getting a better picture of the material. Sadly, this product is almost useless.
The "full-motion video" is small and grainy, and very uninformative. The images are generic photos or drawings that provide no sense of context (though some have a less-than-helpful caption included). Within about 30 minutes, I completely gave up trying to use any of the media in my studies.
The test generation feature showed promise, except for the fact that the questions are not always focused on the material being covered. For example, if you choose a 20-question test over "Documentation and Communication," you're likely to get questions relating to patient assessment, scene safety, transport, and proper patient lifting and moving. And despite the promised 1,000 question database, some topics only have two or three relevant questions to begin with. All this proves extremely unhelpful in trying to do a focused review of a single chapter's material.
Finally, the CD contains an Adobe PDF file of the EMT-B curriculum, but every time I tried to access it via the CD's interface, the program locked up (I was able to access it directly via the CD and Adobe's Acrobat Reader). I experienced regular crashes in using every aspect of the software, despite trying it on three different computers running two different operating systems (Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Home).
The only redeeming quality in this product lies in the ability to create a full-fledged test covering all the material at once, allowing the student to test his comprehension over the entire subject matter. Even then, I was still plagued by lockups and crashes.
If you're prepping for your EMT-B or looking for a refresher, look elsewhere. This CD proved to be nothing but frustrating in its technical ineptness and a complete waste of forty bucks.
