Book Description

December 21, 2005 0323037518 978-0323037518 2
Written by massage therapy expert Sandy Fritz, this unique review resource prepares users for massage therapy exams - both routine semester exams and tests administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Completely updated content reflects changes in both the National Certification Exam (NCE) and typical massage therapy programs, while extensive review of Asian bodywork methods helps students prepare for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. The book features more than 1,200 questions, with two 200-question practice tests with answer keys, as well as a companion CD-ROM that contains interactive review exercises and an electronic practice exam that follows the NCE examination format and gives users a realistic electronic testing experience.
  • Practice tests include questions on the same four major subject areas and at the same percentage of coverage as found on both NCBTMB Certification Exams.
  • A unique chapter contains case-study/critical thinking questions that are useful for exam preparation, as well as for professional massage therapy practice.
  • The appendix includes two 200-question practice tests with answer keys that are patterned after both certification exams.
  • Can be used as a study guide for the certification exam or for classroom exams such as mid-terms or finals.
  • The practice tests on the CD-ROM provide a realistic testing experience similar to the NCE exam.
  • The CD-ROM contains a randomization feature so that questions never appear in the same order for practice tests, nor are they grouped by content area.
  • Tests on the CD-ROM are automatically graded on completion, including a break-down of how the user scored in each of the 4 major subject areas.
  • The Tutorial feature on the CD-ROM allows users to select one of the 4 major subject areas, and then test only in that category. Rationales are displayed when the user selects the correct answer.
  • An expanded section devoted to helping readers learn how to study and take tests effectively includes study tips, test-taking tips, information on the NCBTMB's 2 tests, question analysis, and in-depth information on the four areas of preparation for the National Certification Exam and the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
  • A new section on review resources contains a muscle quick reference guide, a diseases and indications/contraindications to massage therapy chart, content on Asian bodywork methods, labeling exercises, and a comprehensive glossary.
  • Each chapter of review questions begins with study strategies for the content covered in that chapter to help familiarize readers with the topic and how best to study it.
  • New review questions and updated content reflect changes in the exams given by the NCBTMB and massage therapy curriculum.
  • Along with all of the review questions from the chapters in the book and the appendix exams, the CD-ROM contains a complete, brand new practice test with 165 questions that mirrors the NCE exam.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book covers...key foundations of anatomy and physiology; focusing primarily on the muscloskeletal system, as well as providing a basic introduction to the body systems. Detailed but simple diagrams illsutrate joint movement and muscle structure, and photographs show the range of normal movement for joints and limbs."

2.0 out of 5 stars This title is misleading..., May 28, 2002

(REAL NAME)
I'm usually quite satisfied with books by Mosby's, but this one left much to be desired. What interested me most in the book was that it not only had questions and answers so that I could quiz myself, but it also had a discussion of those answers! I thought this aspect could really provide an efficent review, not only defining weak (and strong) spots, but providing the information essential to strenghthening those areas in a very targeted way. However, instead of taking advantage of the opportunity to REVIEW material or clarify a difficult concept in this "discussion" of why each answer is right or wrong for the given question, it will simply make a statement about the need to know the definitions or the need to understand a concept. My favorite example: "It is necessary to define all the terms in the question and answers to correctly answer the question". Yes, I guess that would help. No, those definitions are not included. This particular line is repeated as part of the discussion of the answer time after time as though it is novel, useful, and worth the printed page for a busy student who has a lot at stake here!
The questions are decent questions covering important material, but you can't count on this book for a REVIEW of the material or explanations of those answers if you should happen to need it. If you don't get a question right, this book will not help you to fill in the missing pieces - you will need many reference books at your fingertips to pick up the slack.

3.0 out of 5 stars my least favorite review book, September 5, 2006

This review is from: Mosby's Massage Therapy Review, 2e (Paperback)
I just got back from taking the NCE, so now I feel I can make a good assessment of how well each of the review books I bought helped me to pass the test. Which I did btw, with high scores. I took the NCBTM test, not the NCBTMB test for those of you who know the difference.
To review for the test, I bought Mosby's(mainly because I read it had a CD-ROM of "NCE-type" questions), Review for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Certification by J. Ashton, and The Plain & SImple Guide to Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork Certification by Laura Allen (highly recommended).
Just buy the last two. Mosby's is just a question and answer book really(the book has the exact same stuff as the CD, so why bother with a book?), and if you want an idea of what a computerized test would be like, the CD that comes with the Plain & Simple Guide is awesome. I liked it better. I thought Mosby's questions were too wordy, using a lot of complicated terminology. Not to say that it wouldn't be effective at all, I suppose it would be better to have Mosby's guide than to have no guide at all. I just wish they would have included an actual "review" in the book. Or at least explain why an answer is right (or wrong).

5.0 out of 5 stars Mosby Review Guide, June 4, 2002
By A Customer
Wow! What a wonderful concept by Mosby to finally have a study guide for the National Certification Exam. This book is unlike any other in the fact that it hits every possible question type that you could encounter while taking the exam. This book was great in the sense that it allowed me to see where I was lacking, so therefore I could check over the material that I was less adequate in. I liked the information given on the different question types such as factual recall, clinical reasoning ect... It helped me to understand how to pass the National Exam. Therefore I am happy to give this book an astounding rating because it is something that has assisted me through my career. Thank you!
