4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it, December 4, 2011

This was yet another story about a man-woman relationship. It was a little different, interesting. The Belgian background was different and to see people are the same and different there made a nice twist. A little dumb at times but it was nicely upbeat. I've replayed it and likely will again. I've also lent it to someone and they said it was worth the watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Belgian movie on real life relationship struggles, February 19, 2011
This review is from: Moscow Belgium (DVD)
First things first: I grew up in Belgium, about 30 min. away from where this movie is set (in and around Ghent, Belgium). I had heard great things about this movie through various Belgian connections, but had never had a chance to see it, until now.

"Moscow, Belgium" (106 min.; originally released in 2009) brings the daily struggles of a 41 yr. old woman, Matty, whose husband has moved out due to a fling with a 22 yr. former student. Matty meets Johnny as a result of a car accident in a parking lot, and unexpectedly takes a liking to this much younger man (29 yrs). Things develop from there. Not much really happens, other than to observe the characters in their daily life, and this is not a complaint, mind ya. Matty tries to handle her 3 kids and her husband, while at the same trying to figure out if much younger Johnny, who has himself some skelletons from the past, can really be the one for her. You'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

In all, I was incredibly pleased with this movie, and yes proud (being from Belgium). Who would've thunk it that such a great movie could've been made in Belgium? Special shout-out to Barbara Sarafian as Matty and Anemone Valcke a her 17 yr. old daughter, both of whom bring fantastic performances. This movie picked up a bunch of awards at various fims festivals (including Cannes), and for good reason. By all means, check this out!

One the best films of the year. A quirky, surprising, touching story of lives and loves that will capture your heart.. after a most unlikely beginning. Barbara Sarafian gives an Oscar-caliber performance and Jurgen Delnaet is splendid as her truck-driver amour. A low-budget film that delivers in a big way.

4.0 out of 5 stars down to the earth, August 21, 2010

The movie's setting is a not so rich family living in an appartement building. The movie is so good because it's on the realistic situation where a mom asks herself: "is this the happy life I wanted? I thought I deserved better". She deals with her frustration and that is a happy message. Funny moments and unpredictable plot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Moscow Belgium (DVD)
There is so little room in Hollywood for romantic comedies that fall outside of the norm that the entire genre has become stale and predictable. Then along comes a film like this which presents real people dealing with real emotions in a very human way.

A novel idea, right?

Check out Moscow, Belgium for a film that exposes the good, bad, funny, scary and exciting sides of finding love. You won't be disappointed.

I generally do not like many foreign films, so when my friend picked this out to watch, as this was her turn to pick, I reluctantly sat down to watch it. I was pleasantly surprised. I felt very comfortable relating to the character and at times could place myself into her shoes. It was witty and romantic and really down to earth. I highly recommend this film to any and all, whether your a die-hard foreign language film buff or an amateur one like myself. Enjoy :o)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films of 2009., January 29, 2010

This was in my opinion probably one of the best films of 2009, and definitely one of the best Rom-Com with a refreshingly plausible meet-cute and "real" people. The film is at 94% on RottenTomatoes, and won the Critic's Week section at the Cannes Film Festival. The acting is top notch, with an oscar caliber performance by the lead, Barbara Sarafian, and the direction is wisely understated. The script is just filled with humanity and life.

Can you tell I loved it? Also a great original score which I hope will be available at some point on amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars feeling down?, November 18, 2009
This review is from: Moscow Belgium (DVD)
This movie rocks. Know someone who's having a hard time coping with age? Or maybe someone who could use a laugh and that warm fuzzy feeling. This is the perfect gift. It's one of the most honest movies I've seen in a decade and one that almost everyone can relate to.
