Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-These retellings of Bible stories follow the original closely. The language is easy to understand and the text is inviting for children to read themselves. Attractively designed, the books feature bright, realistic watercolor illustrations on lots of white space and characters that look to be Middle Eastern. The art captures the emotions and the period. Moses ends with the "Burning Bush" and before the "Exodus" but the other two books tell the stories in their entirety. Notes give further information and discussion questions. Adequate selections for the beginning-to-read set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for young children, October 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Moses in the Bulrushes (Bible Stories (Paperback Franklin Watts)) (Paperback)
We read this book to three- and four-year-olds in Sunday school and the beautiful illustrations easily captured their attention. My co-teacher and I teared up at the illustration of Moses's mother after she left her baby in the bullrushes--easily the best rendition I've ever seen of her heartbreak. The authors don't whitewash the story in text or pictures, but their simple language makes it easier as an adult to share the story with small children. I'm buying it for my kids at home because I liked it that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful artwork and text, July 29, 2008

I think this and the other Bible story books by Mary Auld are some of the best there are. They stay very close to the biblical text while still making the story accessible for children. The artwork is beautiful and conveys the sense of the culture and time which I think is important -- ie. the people in the drawings don't look like white Northern Europeans.

2.0 out of 5 stars deficient, May 30, 2005

I expected a lot more out of this book than I got. The illustrations are rather stilted, and the text lends nothing more to the story than I could have gotten out of an adult bible. What I was looking for was a telling of the story of Moses that would be more accessible for children. The author simply cut and pasted out of her bible, it seems to me.
