3.0 out of 5 stars Genius as ever, thin on quantity of music content, February 19, 2010

This review is from: Moses the Lawgiver (Audio CD)
Lyle Mays wrote and performed the music for this spookily atmospheric verbal/music suite, and the instrumental contributions have been separated so we have the chance to hear Lyle's Steve Rodby-produced synth pieces (with additional instrumentation), which range from sound-effects to a couple of pieces that are keepers for any Lyle fan. Lyle is a master at conjuring atmosphere and emotion simultaneously, 'emotional impressionism', if you will. Anything that he does has a rarefied, unique quality, and this is no exception. Just a pity there isn't more performance and 'proper' pieces (and note there's no piano here), but that wasn't the commission, evidently. His soundtrack for the 'Peter Rabbit and Jeremy Fisher' Rabbit Ears release has more song-forms, and is of more value to the Lyle fan as a consequence. Notwithstanding this, you have to hear the music here if you're a fan of 'The Bat' from the Pat Metheny Group's 'Offramp' or if you wish to peruse the outer reaches of Lyle's mercurial, idiosyncratic, genius approach.
