Book Description

Combat Aircraft November 27, 1998
The second volume in the trilogy of Combat Aircraft titles devoted to de Havilland's 'wooden wonder', this book focuses on the Mosquito fighter/fighter-bomber variants, and their users. From its earliest development phase, the aircraft was considered as much a fighter as a bomber, and this was duly reflected when the original 1940 Air Ministry order for 50 Mosquito bombers was modified to 20 bombers and 30 fighters. This volume is the first of its kind exclusively dedicated to the fighter/fighter-bomber variants of de Havilland's classic World War II (1939-1945) aircraft.

This review is from: Mosquito Fighter/Fighter-Bomber Units of World War 2 (Osprey Combat Aircraft 9) (Paperback)
"Mosquito Fighter/Fighter Bomber Units of World War 2" is one of hundreds of titles from Osprey Publications, source of in-depth, well-researched, liberally-illustrated monographs on a wide variety of military history and hardware subjects.

This title hews to Osprey's high standards, being a thorough exploration of the development and use of the DeHavilland Mosquito twin-engine, high-speed aircraft as a fighter (predominantly as a night interceptor and intruder) and as a low-level "hit-and-run" bomber. Interspersed with technical information about the aircraft and histories of the squadrons that employed it are "I-was-there" accounts by pilots, navigators and radar operators that bring home what it was like to fly and fight in a then-state-of-the-art warplane.

This book is a must-have for aviation and military history aficiondos. Osprey also has two other Mosquito-related titles, one dealing with fighter/bomber versions and the other with reconnaissance versions to round out their treatment of the subject. I strongly recommend all three.

I love the Mosquito however this book is about the men and missions flown and not about the airplane. I was wanting more on the airplane. Great book if you are one who likes stories about pilots. I don't. I like data on the aircraft themselves. For me it was a dissapointment.
