4.0 out of 5 stars It Works as Advertised
We purchased a Mosquito Magnet about three years ago, and it never seemed to do particularly well reducing the number of bites my wife and I received when trying to use our deck or backyard. Mosquito Magnet Lurex3-OD-3 Biting Insect Attractant: This product is inserted into the Mosquito Magnet to attract mosquitos, especially the type of mosquitos we have in Texas. I ran it all last summer and have it turned on this spring, but so far I haven't seen a good result,-very few bugs caught in the trap. I think the unit would probably work fine under perfect...

We purchased a Mosquito Magnet about three years ago, and it never seemed to do particularly well reducing the number of bites my wife and I received when trying to use our deck or backyard. The Octenol attractant that MM used not only didn't attract the little bloodsuckers infesting our yard, it almost seemed to be repelling them.
Our area used to be infested with regular woodland mosquitoes, but in the past few years, the nasty, aggressive Asian Tiger mosquitoes have pretty much entirely replaced our friendly (by comparison) local breed. We would have done just about anything to get rid of the Tiger mosquitoes that were active 24/7 and never seemed to give up, but I don't want to turn my yard into a toxic waste dump of pesticides.
The new Lurex did a decent job of attracting the Tigers to the trap. In fact, the MM was swarming with them after a few hours. Now our problem was that the MM's fan just didn't generate enough suction to entrap much of the swarm. The Tiger mosquitoes were swarming dense enough around the MM that I didn't want to get near it to empty the trap net without wearing a beekeeper's outfit.
So, yes, the Lurex-3 attractant worked exactly as advertised, but as a complete system, I'm still a bit underwhelmed with the MM until they install a fan with a higher CFM rate.

I bought my Mosquito magnet last year with out the lurex and it caught nothing. I changed the location as per the instructions but still nothing. Finally I stumbled on to this poduct while searching for something else and now I won't use the mosquito magnet without it. I use both attractants in my magnet to be on the safe side. It does work, but it takes time to find that right location.I live in The DC area. This lure lets me go out in the back yard again.

Living in north Texas, I'm an unfortunate summer flunkie: the sun hates me, but mosquitoes love me. Hmmm. When used according to the package directions, (and this includes following the Mosquito Magnet placement and maintenance instructions as well,) this new lure works very well at attracting Asian Tiger mosquitoes, if they're the dominant breed in your area. You'll know if you have these mosquitoes: they are aggressive biters, both daytime and night. They can be identified by the white "stripes" on their legs, and are winter hardy in temperate regions. This lure should be replaced at each propane tank change, as the gel evaporates over time and will become ineffective when dried out. Overall, a great boon for reclaiming the back yard!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works very well for me, July 24, 2007

I live in south Louisiana. I have a very large property (10 acres). I bought two Mosquito Magnets to put behind my house where the kids play and our patio is. During the first part of the summer I don't use any attractant at all and the Magnets do a great job catching lots of mosquitos and we rarely get bit. In mid July though we start getting bit again. This time from black mosquitos with white stripes instead of the regular brown mosquitos. These are the tigers. I bought some Lurex3 and suddenly the traps started filling with mosquitos again and we are no longer being bitten. This is our second summer using the Magnets. I think they are great. One thing though, I felt like such a dummy. The Lurex came with no instructions. There was an orange sticker on the side of the tube that said remove to expose holes. I removed the orange sticker thinking I had done what I was told. Turns out I was supposed to remove the semi-clear rubber coating that is wrapped around the tube releasing the goo inside from the many large holes in the tube. I am probably the only moron who did not do it right, but just in case someone else was confused this helps a lot with the thing actually working!!! duh! hehe. I give 4 stars because they did not include verbose instructions for dummies like me.

I got this to go with the Mega Catch, not the Mosquito Magnet, for which it is designed. The Octanol which came with the Mega-catch did not seem to work at all even though we live in NJ which is ostensibly in the North and not in the Asian Tiger Mosquito range. Well, we seem to be catching them. It doesn't fit easily in the megacatch, which by the way is more durable than the Magnet, but it does seem to help. As the season progresses, I will do a more scientific study.

I used both the Octonal and this Lurex3. The Lurex3 works far better in Coconut Grove, Florida.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked without problem, July 11, 2006

Everyday it catches 50-60 mosquitos (75% regular 25% Asian tiger), Obviously mosquito population is decreased in our back yard because we are not having mosquito bites any more. I am using Lurex3-OD-3 for asian tiger, this attractant is working for other kind of mosquitos as well. Mosquito magnet placement is very important. You have to read the placement explanations very well.

I live in Cincinnati and have trouble with Asian Tiger Mosquitos. I tried using no attractant and Ocetenol, which Mosquito Magnet recommends for this area. I caught very few mosquitos with this setup. The Lurex made all the difference, though. When I started using Lurex, I caught a few hundred in the first week. I noticed hardware stores in this area stock Ocetenol but not Lurex. I highly recommend trying Lurex if you are not catching mosquitos.

I ran it all last summer and have it turned on this spring, but so far I haven't seen a good result,-very few bugs caught in the trap. I think the unit would probably work fine under perfect conditions, i.e., right placement, no wind, plenty of sunshine, but it's hard to set it up exactly right and get cooperation from the wind and sun. My friend has two units and has given up trying to make them work. I am about to do the same.

If you have Asian Tiger Mosquito's, you need to be using LUREX not Octenol. My catch rate is great after changing to Lurex.
