Gr 3-6--Two eye-catching books about activities children enjoy. These slim volumes contain full-color photographs and creative ideas; both have short introductions, discussions of the basics, and 10 or so projects. Step-by-step instructions provide safety precautions, materials lists, and ideas for expanding the projects. The directions are clear; however, most children will require adult help to achieve a result close to the example. Dress Up features whimsical and clever costumes such as a vampire bat, a stinging jelly fish, a furry alien, and a beautiful butterfly. Minimal hand sewing is necessary, but the use of a sewing machine is not required. Most of the supplies are readily available. Featuring aliens, witches, and wild animal faces, the models in Face Painting are quite intricate and will require adult assistance. The supplies will necessitate a trip to the craft store. Different techniques are explained and there is a section on hand painting. Imaginative and colorful additions to arts and crafts sections.
