Gr 3-5--Cheerful-looking series titles that will make a hit with budding performers. Eldin discusses finger and hand manipulation and presents an array of card tricks--some easy, others more difficult--that would form a strong repertoire for any beginner. In addition there is advice about using dialogue to gain and keep the attention of audiences. Puppeteer offers brief information about producing a show and practical guidance for giving puppets individual expression and character. Instructions for making several types of puppets are covered along with directions for the appropriate theaters. The creation and manipulation of the ancient Japanese Bunraku puppet, not usually found in a book for this age range, is included. Both titles have full-color photos, helpful line drawings, and brief glossaries. Some adult help will be needed in using both of these books. Group leaders will find Puppeteer quite useful.

A most excellent choice,

This review is from: Most Excellent: Puppeteer Pb (Most Excellent Book Of...) (Paperback)
As the title suggests, a most excellent make and do book, especially for older children, or adults intested in basic puppet making. Though color photos and drawings, as well as brief descriptions this book shows how to make 9 different puppets, including a basic glove puppet, several rod puppets, shadow puppets, 3 different marionettes, and a bunraku puppet. The puppets are made mostly from simple inexpensive recycled household items, such as cardboard, toilet paper and wrapping paper tubes, straws, egg cartons, and plastic milk jugs. While the book shows how to construct a puppet stage, it does not go into much detail about puppet performance, however, it sparks the imagination and gets you started on making and playing with homemade puppets.
