This is the story of a third grade girl who overhears her parents' conversations where they refer to "the most important thing." The book describes her anxiety, as she figures out that something is wrong. Finally, her parents tell her that they are getting a divorce and she learns that "the most important thing" is her - that her parents will continue to make her wellbeing a priority.

The basic message is that children remain important to parents when they divorce, which is a crucial thing for children to hear when they know their parents are getting a divorce. This book will also normalize some of the anxiety involved. But I would want to reassure other children that seeing parents have private conversations or conflicts does NOT always mean a divorce. I can imagine that the girl's growing concern based on small incidents, which is then validated, could feed normal fears in some children.

Because this is a picture book but the sentence structure and vocabluary are complex, I think this book is most appropriate at a 2nd-4th grade level. While the storyline is equally applicable to boys and girls, the amount of pink and flowers in the artwork probably means this book will appeal more to girls.

Overall, I would give this book a "thumbs-up" for use in appropriate settings. It has a positive ending and shows that divorce doesn't mean parents have stopped caring about their children. Of course, use common sense about whether this book is the right one for your child. As an elementary school guidance counselor, I will be happy to add this to my collection, and plan to use it in my next divorce group.

I would not recommend this book, it made my daughter feel worse. I would recommend, "My family is changing." Much more factual and positive.

Great book to open discussion on divorce, after all the kids are the most important issue!

I read this book to my two young sons when their father and I told them we were divorcing. The book helped them understand that it wasn't their fault and that their interests would always be more important to me than anything that might happen in the divorce. The book is great to break the news to kids, and also is great if the divorce remains amicable. There are others that are better, though, if the divorce is a messy one. All and all, though, it is a terrific way to break sad news to young kids.

I was looking for a child's book on separation, but each book I find uses the word "divorce". It is a good book, but not for those who just want to discuss something not so "final". If you are looking for final, then this is for you.
