Editorial Reviews

'Most Messed Up' finds the Old 97's at their raucous best, all swagger and heart, and just a little bit tipsy. Titles like 'Wasted,' 'Intervention,' 'Wheels Off,' and 'Most Messed Up' hint at the kind of narrators Miller likes to inhabit, men who possess an appetite for indulgence and won't let a few bad decisions get in the way of a good story.

Biography

"Rock and roll's been very very good to me," Rhett Miller sings on "Longer Than You've Been Alive," an epic six-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation on his life in music. It's a rare moment of pulling back the curtain, on both the excesses and tedium of the world of a touring musician, and it's the perfect way to open the Old 97's new album, ... I have them all; and this is one of their best albums.
Charles Freeberg
If you are a fan of the Old 97s, or if you just want to give 'em a listen, I highly recommend this album.

Nothing funny about the album - very good sound and stories seem real.

I am a long- time Old 97s fan and have followed them for years on the road. Frankly every album since "Too Far to Care" has suffered initially in my mind by comparison. It usually takes weeks or months or years for me to discover the genius in each new album. This album is the exception. It hit me on first listening as the tightest, most representative album of the band. An instant collection of all-time greats.

Rhett and the boys have done it again, giving us a great party album that won't be leaving my playlist anytime soon. The opening track showcases a retrospective Mr. Miller, looking back on all the fun (among other things) that he's had over the course of his career (thus far!). He continues to regale us with stories of the rock n' roll lifestyle, but always incorporating at least an ounce of maturity (if you listen closely), just proving that he is old enough to know better, but still too young to care. Tommy Stinson adds some chops to several cuts lending some sassy Replacements' sneer to an already sassy album. If you are a fan of the Old 97s, or if you just want to give 'em a listen, I highly recommend this album. But don't stop there...get 'em all!

I'm a huge fan of this band. I have every one of their albums, have seen them live half a dozen times and have tickets to see them in May. I've tried but cannot connect with this album like I have their others. Most of the songs sound similar. There are few memorable melodies as we usually find on an Old 97's album. There are few clever turns of phrase that we're used to getting from Rhett. There are too many gratuitous f-bombs. Even the usually reliable Murray wasn't able to offer a particularly interesting song. I'm surprised by all the 5-star reviews and, especially, the comparisons to Too Far to Care. Too Far to Care is a top-ten desert island album for me; this one wouldn't be in my top 500. It gives me no joy to write a less than stellar review for an Old 97's album, but this one just doesn't do it for me despite repeated listens.

This sounds like music from a hungry young bands first recording with lyrics only too much time on the road can inspire. Clearly the BEST new disc I've heard in years.

I have some of their older stuff and always liked them but didn't realize they were still around. With the state of music these days it is hard to find good stuff. This is pretty damn good! Driving guitars and witty lyrics make for a great listen.Highly recommended.

I was turned onto the Old 97's by a friend of mine and after listening to a few of their albums on Prime Music decided to purchase Most Messed Up. I'm a huge fan now! Their mix of country and rock is a welcome divergence from modern country music and Most Messed Up is one of the most complete albums I've heard in awhile from any genre. After listening through several times I found that there's not really a bad song in the bunch.

One word of warning....don't listen to this album around the kids! I know, it explicitly states that the lyrics might be explicit, but I didn't really know what to expect. The lyrics are a little irreverent, but not over the top.

Pros
- Awesome album from top to bottom

Cons
- Can't share with my 2 and 3 year old just yet

This is the album I've been waiting for since TFTC. I am happy that the guys grew up, fell in love, and started families but I was afraid when that happened, I forever lost the Old 97s I fell in love with - the boys that drink a lot of whiskey and get scarred by fast women who left them heartbroken. I'm ecstatic to see they still have this in them. THANK YOU, RHETT, MURRY, KEN, AND PHILIP! THIS IS BRILLIANT!

I have them all; and this is one of their best albums. It's raw, yet polished. They are one of the most underrated bands around, and that's good, but people are missing out on some great music. When you see all the other drivel out there, I wonder how a band this good goes unnoticed. Good luck trying to buy one of their cd's in a retail store. It's a shame really, but that's part of their allure. They are a true bar band, and that's the way they like it. They wont be selling out arenas, but go see them at a club like 9:30 in DC. You will leave fulfilled, which is rare these days. They are true professionals, and know what their audience wants. I cant wait to see them at the end of May in DC!! 5 stars!!!
