Editorial Reviews

'Most Messed Up' finds the Old 97's at their raucous best, all swagger and heart, and just a little bit tipsy. Titles like 'Wasted,' 'Intervention,' 'Wheels Off,' and 'Most Messed Up' hint at the kind of narrators Miller likes to inhabit, men who possess an appetite for indulgence and won't let a few bad decisions get in the way of a good story.

I am a long- time Old 97s fan and have followed them for years on the road. Frankly every album since "Too Far to Care" has suffered initially in my mind by comparison. It usually takes weeks or months or years for me to discover the genius in each new album. This album is the exception. It hit me on first listening as the tightest, most representative album of the band. An instant collection of all-time greats.

I'm a huge fan of this band. I have every one of their albums, have seen them live half a dozen times and have tickets to see them in May. I've tried but cannot connect with this album like I have their others. Most of the songs sound similar. There are few memorable melodies as we usually find on an Old 97's album. There are few clever turns of phrase that we're used to getting from Rhett. There are too many gratuitous f-bombs. Even the usually reliable Murray wasn't able to offer a particularly interesting song. I'm surprised by all the 5-star reviews and, especially, the comparisons to Too Far to Care. Too Far to Care is a top-ten desert island album for me; this one wouldn't be in my top 500. It gives me no joy to write a less than stellar review for an Old 97's album, but this one just doesn't do it for me despite repeated listens.

Rhett and the boys have done it again, giving us a great party album that won't be leaving my playlist anytime soon. The opening track showcases a retrospective Mr. Miller, looking back on all the fun (among other things) that he's had over the course of his career (thus far!). He continues to regale us with stories of the rock n' roll lifestyle, but always incorporating at least an ounce of maturity (if you listen closely), just proving that he is old enough to know better, but still too young to care. Tommy Stinson adds some chops to several cuts lending some sassy Replacements' sneer to an already sassy album. If you are a fan of the Old 97s, or if you just want to give 'em a listen, I highly recommend this album. But don't stop there...get 'em all!

Love the old 97s this is a good album but some of the songs sound like remakes of older better songs.

I love this disc, with songs like This is the Ballad, and Longer Than You've Been Alive that instantly go into the Pantheon of great 97s songs, along with top notch material the rest of the way, they have returned to form. Much less filler than on some of the more recent discs, and though it's not the match of the stellar Too Far to Care (a pinnacle of pop song-craft and one of my favorite albums ever), it's a welcome return to the honky-punk-pop-rock music and sharp lyrics that fans of the band have come to love.

The only criticism I have is that Rhett is way too liberal with the F-bomb on a few songs. It's hard to play around your kids, and I've got a 7 year old that loves them (but I'm often a tad late on the skip button).

It's got an explicit lyrics warning for a reason, because this one was recorded without holding anything back. Helluva rock band having fun at a place where they've done it all and know that they like doing and are happy with that. Longer Than You've Been Alive, the opening song, sums it all up, "I'm not crazy about songs that get self-referential/And most of this stuff should be kept confidential/But who even gives half a f*** anymore/You should know the truth, it's both a blast and a bore." More blast than bore here, get it if you like the Old 97's or if you just like rock n roll.

I have been a fan of Old 97's since around 1996, and have found something to love about each of their releases, but this is the most fun I've had with an Old 97's album since TFTC. I loved it all the way through on the first listen, and its charm hasn't worn off yet - I'm happy to report that I listened to it on a four-hour car trip last weekend - both going and coming back - straight through, over and over, with no thought of hearing anything else, and I didn't scan forward to skip a song even once. How rare is that, to enjoy every song on a record that much? I don't think it's necessarily a high watermark of Rhett's or Murray's songwriting artistry - so if it covers some familiar ground and doesn't really seem to stretch their talents in new directions like Satellite Rides and the Grand Theatres did, the upside is that it's pleasantly underworked and loose, and they just rock your butt off all the way through. Love this record long time - can't wait to see them at the beach this summer with Tommy Stinson!

I'm also a huge fan of the band, own everything they have produced, and have seen them live many times - most recently in 2013. I did not care for the album at all. Poorly contrived lyrics, which is not what the band is known for, all songs had the same theme, and sounded very similar. So, so disappointed.
