Best of the Bunch!,

This review is from: 16 Most Requested (Audio CD)
This CD is the best of the bunch of Mitch Miller's recordings. Many old favorites that will have your kids wondering how you know the words. I grew up watching "Sing along with Mitch" back in the old days when parents chose the TV shows and kids could watch or go read. Everybody sang along (5 kids, 2 parents) and enjoyed the show. Remember the "fuss" when Mitch introduced Leslie Uggams the first time? America was shocked that an actual black girl was on prime time: however, everyone was soon enchanted with her and color ceased to matter. Too bad she is not on this CD.

This is a fun CD for those of us who grew up watching and hearing the Sing Along with Mitch television show, but the songs and arrangements make this a fun album for kids or adults who never even heard of it. A good selection of tunes, including five fun medleys. My only complaint -- NO lyric sheet (as there are with some other Mitch Miller CDs) -- how are we supposed to "sing along"? Future editions should include a lyric sheet. Otherwise perfect and perfectly fun.

I guess you can't go wrong with a collection of the most popular songs by a popular artist. This is a good selection of songs, and they are intelligently organized, with the 4 marching songs placed together at the start of the collection. "Side By Side" ("Oh we ain't got a barrel of money, maybe we're ragged and funny...") is an especially beautiful song (written by Harry Woods), beautifully done, with very optimistic lyrics. The best thing about this album is it contains some Mitch Miller songs that are not available elsewhere on CD, such as "Side By Side" and "March From The River Kwai." The worst thing is that there are so many good Mitch Miller songs that are not available on CD that there is pressure on a collection like this to include more than just 16 songs. For example, a few out-of-print Mitch songs I'd really like to get on CD are "California," "Avalon," "You Must've Been A Beautiful Baby," "Happy Days Are Here Again," "Moonlight Bay," and "I've Got Rings On My Fingers."

If you enjoy the Mitch Miller sound, this CD offers just what it says, the "16 Most Requested Songs," including the theme song from "Sing A-long With Mitch," namely, "I Love to Sing A-long."Miller's choir of about two dozen men generally sing in unison. The arrangements move along well and are geared to make it easy for we non-singers to join in. Great for families, church socials, or club fun.

Mitch Miller's recordings bring back so many memories from the days when I was just a young kid! My father used to enjoy listening to these songs; and even today that wonderful singing remains a pleasure to hear. Mitch's chorus could harmonize faultlessly--and they did, time after time after time. In addition, the quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is good although a bit standard for the "16 Most Requested Songs" CD series.
"The Yellow Rose of Texas" starts the album off with a tune that has a great beat; that upbeat marching flavor works wonders for this ballad. I really like the vocal ranges of the singers; they do this one very well and I'm impressed. "The March from the River Kwai" is one of my very favorite tracks on this album; the chorus performs marvelously and I can only wish I could whistle that well! "The Bowery Grenadiers" is yet another marching tune that brings a smile to my face; the brass, drums, percussion and more all serve to carry the melody well as these fine performers sing and never let go of a single superfluous note! The "Children's Marching Song (Nick Nack Paddy Whack)" is sure to grab the attention of very young kids; and I like hearing the very sweet "Do-Re-Mi" from "The Sound of Music." Listen also for the singers to outdo even themselves on the medley that includes "I've Been Working on the Railroad;" "Sing Along" with that harmonica and ukulele; and "Tiptoe through the Tulips with Me" is a very well done classic song. "Shine on Harvest Moon/For Me and My Gal" is my favorite medley on the album; these charming songs really make me happy when I hear them with that signature Mitch Miller sound! "You Are My Sunshine" is yet another number with a sparkling arrangement; and they all handle "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" with polish and finesse. Al Jolson would have loved it! There's another pretty medley that includes "Singin' in the Rain" which has been performed in more than one movie including the movie of the same name with Gene Kelly; and "I'm Looking over a Four Leaf Clover" is easily a huge favorite of mine--what an ageless, sweet number! "Sweet Adeline" is part of another medley; and the relentlessly upbeat "Side by Side" never sounded better than when these singers perform it to perfection and beyond! The album closes with a fine medley including "When You Were Sweet Sixteen." Mitch Miller brought so much happiness to millions of people; we are all so much better off for his having shared his artistry with us. The chorus on this album never sounded better and that's grand. I highly recommend this for any Mitch Miller fan; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals from the mid 20th century will enjoy this one as well. This also makes a fine starter CD for people just discovering the beautiful music of Mitch Miller.

A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO A FAVORITE MUSIC ICON........,
This review is from: 16 Most Requested (Audio CD)
MY MOTHER BOUGHT NEARLY ALL THE MITCH MILLER SING ALONG LPS IN THE EARLY 1960'S. HER AND I SHARED THE WONDERFUL SONGS AND PERFORMANCES OF MITCH MILLER VIRTUALLY UNTIL HER PASSING IN 2005. I STILL OWN ALL MY MOM'S ORIGINAL LPS AND OTHER MATERIAL ABOUT MITCH MILLER THAT I HAVE COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS. THEY ARE AND WILL ALWAYS BE A GREAT COMFORT TO ME. MITCH MILLER'S RECORDINGS MAKE ME FEEL CLOSE TO MY MOTHER AND BRING BACK SO MANY MEMORIES OF GREAT TIMES. 16 MOST REQUESTED SONGS IS AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO MITCH MILLER AND HIS MUSIC. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT SONY REISSUE ALL THE SING-ALONG ALBUMS AND THINK ABOUT DOING HIS TELEVISON SHOW ON DVD.......NOW, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!!!!GARY JASINKONIS........EAST NORTHPORT, NEW YORK...........

It is wonderful to find these old classics which can be found no where else. It is only music like this that can take me away from my satellite radio.I also recommend the new 50 song CD by Mitch.

I so well remember Mitch Miller and the Gang. I am happy to have some of his recordings so I can enjoy once again. His music is so upbeat and cheerful and makes me feel fortunate to have lived in a time when this kind of artist did so much to entertain the country with his memorable music.
I would recommend this album to anyone who remembers this guy. |
