Book Description

0786437103 978-0786437108 May 21, 2008
Described by the BBC as "one of the most significant American films ever made" and by the Los Angeles Times as "appallingly and unforgivably vile," Soldier Blue became explosively linked to real events of the Vietnam War as a result of the uncanny similarities between the U.S. Cavalry's extermination of Native Americans depicted at the film's finale and the American massacre of Vietnamese civilians at My Lai, revealed to the public in November 1969--nine months before the film was released.

Drawing on primary sources and interviews with individuals associated with the production, this work solves the longstanding mystery of whether Soldier Blue, a picture that set a new mark in cinematic violence in 1970, deliberately echoed events in the Vietnam War. In addition, the author details the bizarre location shoot in Mexico, describes the various post-production and censorship problems encountered by the film's director and producers, and examines the circumstances in and beyond the American film industry in the late 1960s that led to the creation of such a radical and bitter film. Richly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, the book includes a complete list of cast/crew credits and a revised final budget for the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of info, May 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Most Savage Film: Soldier Blue, Cinematic Violence and the Horrors of War (Hardcover)
Loved the book. It has all kinds of info on this superb movie. It's a shame the illustrations are not in color and the paper is not glossy or great quality. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great book, but presentation could have been better. For those familiar with British comic anuals (Beano, Dandy etc) typically released at Christmas, it is exactly the same build quality except it is in Black and White.
If you love this movie and want to know EVERYTHING about it, this is THE book.
I do not regret my purchase.......
So 5 star content, 3 star quality presentation. Average 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most excellent book, September 25, 2010
This review is from: The Most Savage Film: Soldier Blue, Cinematic Violence and the Horrors of War (Hardcover)
Staggeringly well researched book provides a wonderful insight into the production of Soldier Blue and the period in which it was produced. The profiling of the major players involved serves to provide a great insight into the film's underated director, Ralph Nelson, script writer john Gay aswell as the key cast members Candice Bergen, Peter Strauss and Donald Pleasance. And yet it does not just stop there- it goes into every other aspect of production from scoring to story boarding as well as dealing with the films connections with Vietnam and My Lai.A must have.
