I saw "Young@Heart" last year -- and I'm a "Die-Hard" and "Hotel Rwanda" kind of guy... But I found this movie such an unexpected joy. Authentic and touching and at least some of the pop songs they cover could stand on their own right, notably Coldplay's "Fix You" (from "X & Y"). So I was eager to get the original soundtrack when it came out. Alas, they seem to have released the DVD, but not the score separately. I was hesitant to buy this compilation without previewing it, but the risk was well-rewarded. This is NOT a novelty album. Sure, it's old people singing covers of pop songs, but at its worst it's no more syrupy than "We Are the World" and at its best you get, well... a truly inspired rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You." And some other nicely done rock classics, all the more poignant to listen to knowing that several of the performers died shortly after these recordings. See the movie! I think it might be hard to fully appreciate this album without that context.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highest Praise, May 21, 2009

I could not agree more -- this soundtrack reflects the tender genius of a hardworking group of elders in Northampton, Mass. -- a very diverse and liberal college town. Their choral director is masterful in his choice of music, interpretation and sheer passion for the singers' and their art. The documentary has compelled me to look up the original versions of these songs because of the touching delivery and power of the YAH chorus. Can't recommend "Fix You" more highly, esp.

Get both -- the documentary, which will tear at your heart and also thrill you with pride in these elders and their great accomplishments -- including a couple of mean James Brown-like performances, and the CD. You will be richly rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tears of Joy, March 12, 2010
This review is from: Mostly Live (Audio CD)
Having just seen AVATAR, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and SHUTTER ISLAND, I tuned into PBS to watch Young At Heart.

And this was after seeing it over the Holidays on PBS, too.

All the millions and billions of dollars connected to those Hollywood "films" can't touch Young At Heart.

Get out the KLEENEX, Mom. This is what soul is all about. Pure life, expressed through music and togetherness.

Watching prisoners jump to their feet in ovation, watching these joyful seniors persevere... leaves Tinseltown in the dust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome!, March 6, 2010

First, watch the Young@Heart DVD. You will laugh and cry. Second, purchase this CD. It is not a soundtrack of the movie, but some of the songs from the movie are here. Most are even better! Then for alternative versions of a few songs, and a soundtrack of the movie, purchase the 2-CD import of "Young at Heart". It contains songs from this CD and from the download-only "Soundtrack". Rhino should have 1) put "Soundtrack" on CD by itself like they did this CD, and 2) made the two CD set contain all of the songs of "Mostly Live" and "Soundtrack". To hear a sweet English 93 year old lady singing "Ruby Tuesday" is priceless. Or, Joe Benoit belting out "One". "Take a Walk on the Wild Side"... it goes on. I have a few thousand records and CDs. This is one of my favorites.

I saw the movie of this "Young @ Heart" chorus and went back a 2nd time to see it again. I enjoyed both times immensely. I wanted to have something at hand to enjoy their music so I ordered the CD. I am 61 yrs old and grew up w/their music and have also sung in choruses throughout my life. It's good to know that I don't ever have to stop singing no matter what my age. If we had a chapter here in Hawaii, I would be the first to audition (my 90 yr old Mom would join w/me as well). Keep rocking Young @ Heart!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album, January 4, 2012

Young @ Heart is one of my favorite bands. If you haven't seen the movie, I strongly recommend seeing that. It gives the voices a lot of characters. The movie is one of my all time favorites. It'll make you laugh and cry and everything in between. I've recommend the movie to friends, family, parents, and grandparents. Literally everyone I have showed this movie to has loved it.

The album goes along great with it. Some new songs in the mix and many from the movies. The level of raw emotion you get from these elders is nothing but amazing. Buy this cd.

I bought this music CD along with the video. It is a very entertaining CD because the songs are sung by a chorus of elder folks. The twist is, the choice of songs are from previous generations, mostly rock and now sung by a Grandparent generation who would most likely yell, "Turn that noise off!". Picture a chorus of Grandmas and Grandpas in blue jeans and T-Shirts singing rock songs! Gotta Love It! Get the video too so you can follow their journey of learning these songs and see the concerts they've performed through happy and sad times.
