Romanticism with an orchestral sweep, September 25, 1999
This review is from: Le Mot DE Passe - New 1999 (Audio CD)
Though I wasn't initially as entranced by "Le Mot De Passe" as I was with PK's previous "Dans Ma Chair," I've come to love this disc. It has the dramatic sweep of a soundtrack for some incredible novel - intensely moody and emotional, alternately introspective and soaring, but ultimately as uplifting as "Dans Ma Chair."~~~~~ You will find here - and in all of Patricia Kaas' music - a melodic sense rare in an era in which "attitude" and/or catchy lyrical content often replace any effort at musicality, much less timeless art. Although I don't find this release's songwriting (by Pascal Obispo and Didier Golemanas) to be as seamless a match to Kaas' style and vocal ability as that of her previous releases, the difference is a range of degrees between "great" and "modern classic." If the sound of a truly magnificent voice in the jazz/pop/rock genre is something you value, you really can't go wrong here. ~~~~~The standout tracks are "Les Eternelles," which builds and builds to a stunning climax over a strange, recurring carnival-like orchestral melody; "Une Femme Comme Une Autre," an intense song of betrayal and heartbreak; "Si Tu Reves" - a single, long crescendo of hope and determination; and the final track, "Et Je M'en Veux," an intensely emotional performance by Kaas accompanied only by piano.~~~~~~~~~~~~~P.S. - Live performances seldom even equal studio recordings, but Kaas' 07/24/99 concert at Hannover, Germany with the Hannover NDR Pops Orchestra (broadcast on German television,) brought out the full orchestral sweep of "Le Mot De Passe" in a way that surpasses the original recording. For Kaas to deliver such incredible performances on as heavy a tour schedule as she sets for herself, is just phenomenal.<<<Newsbreak: PK is scheduled for two live performances at the new "Paris Las Vegas" casino, this Thanksgiving weekend (11/26/99 and 11/27/99.)>>>

Perfect - Keep singing for us, December 13, 1999
This review is from: Le Mot DE Passe - New 1999 (Audio CD)
I am listening to this immaculate collection of songs right now. I am in love with Patricia Kaas since her debut. Patricia Kaas is not afraid to be different all the time. Her music may change styles and mood from album to album but it always retains its high quality and her voice remains very emotional and thrilling. On "Le Mot De Passe" I especially loved collaborations with Jean-Jacques Goldman (magnificent 'Les Chansons Commencent') and Zazie ('J'Attends De Nous') along with 'Les Eternelles' and 'Ma Liberte Contre La Tienne'. The orchestra sounds great in all songs. I wish I was given a chance to be on one of her concerts. And finally. Please post the CD booklet's photo on this page.

A GREAT LOVE ALBUM, February 16, 2000
This review is from: Le Mot DE Passe - New 1999 (Audio CD)
Although I am not a fan, I admit that Patricia Kaas has the best lyrics and slow music to offer on this album - especially considering that they were written by the best French songwriters and musicians : 10 songs written by Pascal Obispo and 2 by Jean-Jacques Goldman. Both being my favorite French singers, I had to get my hands on "Le Mot de Passe." Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Only 4 songs have a real beat to them, all others being slow yet beautiful to listen to, lyrically and musically speaking. My own favorite song of this album is "Mon chercheur d'or."
