ustful places, luscious women

"Taschen is this art vampire. He's going to bite me on the neck and my art is going to have immortality."
—Chas Ray Krider (from an interview with Eric Kroll)

"A number of years ago I began to see distinctive layouts in Hustler's Leg World that got me nervous. The photographs were that good. Whoever it was had style and made the women his women. Krider women. Women I began to desire on a monthly basis. In the world of professional golf there is an expression 'the world's greatest golfer not to win a major tournament.' Chas Ray Krider was the world's greatest erotic photographer not to have a book.

Thanks to TASCHEN we now have over 160 Krider images to pore over. To salivate over. Like a good film noir, he takes us to lustful places. Is it a crime scene or a sea of lust? These beautiful, languid women wait for whom? For me. For you. They play the 'waiting game' beautifully. An ass in the air, a pair of crossed legs in nylons, all bathed in warm tones. A still life unstuck in time. So this is what goes on behind closed doors?

Oh, I almost forgot. Alongside these many Midwest femme fatales is Dita, raven-haired icon. Not since Betty Page has a woman fleshed out so correctly a vintage girdle and bra ensemble.

Enjoy. He takes you places where you only vaguely think you have been."

5.0 out of 5 stars somthing very new and very familier at the same time, December 8, 2004
This review is from: Motel Fetish (Photobook) (Hardcover)
I've seen a few of Chas Ray Krider in the The Mammoth Book of Illustrated Erotica, this is one of the cases in which the black and white print of the mammoth book really hurt the quality and character of a photo, but i liked it all the same. I ordered the book and was really really excited to unexpectedly fall on such a gem.

The book itself is large, very good prints and quality of the entire production is superb, but non of it would be fun if it weren't for krider's wonderful style and deep understanding and research into his fetish, which is motel rooms - the whole style's very cinematic, a lot of the shots look as if they are freeze frames of motion, and though the pose are very constructed ,they are built to represent a scenario.

The photo reflect that motel feeling of danger, excitement and temporary environment, the models and room have a very vintage feel about them, and the lighting is again, very cinematic.

Another added bonus, for me, was a wonderful preface written by Eric Kroll, which i admire, the connection between the two both in relation to fetish and to photography's very evident and so, it was nice to have one of them comment on the works of the other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black garters, ugly lamps & tacky carpets!, December 31, 2002

This review is from: Motel Fetish (Photobook) (Hardcover)
Motel Fetish is an illusion - a suggestive, seductive, fake place. Here, a corner of a Columbus, Ohio photographer's studio is transformed into a technicolor pocket of hypnotic sleaze that has a resonance all of us can identify and none of us can explain. There's a touch of what you like about Betty Page in Kryder's work but there's deliberate stillness in the models that is enigmatic, interesting. You are slumming on the naughty frontier when you visit Motel Fetish; stumbling about a thirty five dollar room, knocking over lamps with a girdle-and-stocking bad girl when you should be looking for a job.

Motel Fetish is a Taschen product and fans of their offerings will know what to expect. Some of these photos were on Kryder's Website, many were not. Since the book was issued the Website has slimmed down a bit and some of the choicest pictures from there didn't make it to the book. Esoteric erotica is subjective stuff but for this reviewer there could have been a better selection of images from the Website as many images in the book are substantially the same thing. I bought Motel Fetish looking for visual variety in a dull world. I found that in spades and I'm hooked and impatient for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY PLEASED WITH MY STAY, August 24, 2004
This review is from: Motel Fetish (Photobook) (Hardcover)
A very good book. Definitely worth the money. The photographs aren't trashy, but VERY explicit. They're also very well taken as far as lighting, and clarity. Unlike some fetish books I have seen where the photographers photo's look like they've been taken with a disposable camera and publish in a book. This book has top notch photography of very attractive nude women. The book is very thick, and very large. Definitely a must have for your bookshelf.
