A Rock/Gospel Revival Not To Be Missed.,
By Anthony Accordino (Massapequa Park, New York United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Motel Shot (Audio CD)
Delaney and Bonnie were a husband and wife blue eyed soul team who waxed some pretty awesome rock n soul, for a short time during the late 60's and early 70's. Bonnie Bramlett was America's answer to england's Dusty Springfield. She packed a powerful and soulful voice that put her on par with all the greats of the day. Fortunately, their careers, were aided by some of the giants of classic rock, allowing them some much needed exposure. The album "Motel Shot", was one of their best efforts, and unfortunately is only available on import. Songs like "Never Ending Song Of Love"[top 20 hit], is an acoustic gem that anyone over 45 will remember. The gospel/tambourine driven sound of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", and "Where The Soul Never Dies" are worth the price of the cd alone. Along for the ride here are, Duanne Allman, Dave Mason, Leon Russell,Rita Coolidge and Joe Cocker. Also playing are Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, and Bobby Whitlock who were better known as Clapton's Dominoes. As you can see, they kept good company, but all these players went on to form the core of Joe Cockers Maddogs and Englishmen, and the rest is history. Without a band of that caliber, Delaney and Bonnie slowly faded from the charts, and never repeated the success of "Motel Shot". This is a fantastic recording of a once great duo[even if it was short lived], who had the goods and delivered. A more affordable and generous retrospective is the Rhino cd, "The Best Of Delaney And Bonnie, which has 18 cuts and some great tunes with Eric Clapton and George Harrison.

This review is from: Motel Shot (Audio CD)
I REMEMBERED THIS ALBUM FROM 26 YEARS AGO AND ORDERED IT WHEN I SAW IT WAS AVAILABLE. TIME HAD NOT DIMINISHED IT'S GREATNESS. FORGET ALL THE CHEEZY MTV UNPLUGGED, THIS IS THE REAL THING. TO HEAR DUANE ALMANS ACOUSTIC SLIDE ON "SING MY WAY HOME WAS WORTH THE PRICE ALONE". THIS IS NOW MY FAVORITE CD IN MY COLLECTION. AS ESSENTIAL TO ANY MUSIC LOVERS COLLECTION AS LAYLA.

LISTEN ONCE JUST FOR FUN. THEN LISTEN AGAIN VERY CAREFULLY.THESE PEOPLE TAKE SOUTHERN GOSPEL, DELTA BLUES, AND COUNTRY, THEY DISECT THEM ALL, AND LIKE DR. FRANKENSTEIN, THEY CONSTRUCT THEIR OWN MONSTER (GOOD OLE ROCK & ROLL). WHEN I LISTENED TO MY SHINEY NEW VINYL IN 1971, ALL I KNEW WAS THIS MUSIC MADE ME FEEL REAL GOOD. LISTENING TO MY SHINEY NEW DVD TODAY, I CAN HEAR WHAT AN ARTISTIC DOCUMENT THIS IS. THIS SESSION SPAWNED MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN, AND DEREK & THE DOMINOES. IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY YOU CAN HEAR ERIC C. SINGING ON COME ON IN MY KITCHEN. BUT EVEN IF YOU DONT LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY, YOU WILL HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME. ENJOY! 50+ AND STILL ROCKIN.

I had been hunting this album for years to add to my Duane collection. This Japanese CD is great. The remastering to CD format is outstanding. Beautiful tone and clarity. Mostly gospel standards but the disc really hits home with Duane Allman's soaring slide on The liner notes are mostly in Japanese so it's hard to tell who played on what cut :( . Still the music is acoustic and spontaneous .

Motel Shot, Great Unplugged Before It Was A Fad,
This review is from: Motel Shot (Audio CD)
What can you say. Delaney and Bonnie did an unplugged before this became a fad. And what came out was one of the best albums from the 1970's. A combination of soul, gospel, folk, and rock-and-roll. Its a combination that works. Doing famous traditional songs like "Will The Circle be Unbroken", to spiritual music "Talkin About Jesus". Others songs, like "Going Down The Road" just add so much to this album. From the great piano playing to just the raw emotion in this album. Bonnie Bramlett voice seemed at her best. This album shows the early 1970's was a creative era in music. I can't say more about this album.

This is a beautiful collection of relaxing, mellow, good-timing tunes from one of the finest bands ever to tour America. The level of musicianship is very high, what with Duane Allman, Jim Keltner, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell et al., but the sound is relaxed, mellow, compassionate and wonderful. This is a gem of an overlooked album, mixing gospel, soul, country, rock, and hymnals, that should not be missed!

Remember how you go back and check out music that you thought was so cool, so hip or so hot - you search for years, finally find it and then are disappointed? Motel Shot does NOT fall into this category. This album still surprises me with its excellent harmonies and free falling songs. It goes beyond my expectations and still thrills me. Check out the musicians on this record and go back in time.

Give Delaney his props!,
This review is from: Motel Shot (Audio CD)
I agree with the rest of the reviewers, GREAT album. However, the highlight song for me is Delaney singing "Faded Love". Obsolutely by far the best version I've ever heard of this classic! What an interpretation!

Full of spirit, soul and sincerity. Nobody gets sweeter, smoother tone out of Gibson than Duane. Very few musicians get sound to glow. My only regret - they didn't let him run with 'Sing My Way Home.' Hardly a complaint though. More than enough music to go around. I just ordered 2 more Delaney and Bonnie albums.
