Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This is my current favorite of the many available recordings of Bach's wonderful motets. René Jacobs elicits superb, color-drenched singing from the excellent RIAS Kammerchor, and his interpretive choices make the six motets cogently dramatic and musically coherent. The sonorous singing is radiant, with remarkably fluid phrasing and precise articulation. Jacobs brings variety to the works through discreet use of a period orchestra with organ-led continuo and by varying the size of his chorus and assigning some sections to soloists. The rhetorical nature of the works is preserved without stinting on their expressiveness or intimacy. These effects are aided by excellent sound. Highly recommended. --Dan Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally sublime!, December 4, 1999

This review is from: Motets (Audio CD)
These six motets, and Rene Jacobs' performance of them, are totally sublime! My favorite on this CD has got to be the first movement of "Komm, Jesu, Komm". I highly recommend this beautiful set of Bach's works to any classical music lover!

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner, February 23, 2002
This review is from: Motets (Audio CD)
This is a great performance of some of Bach's finest works. A real 5 star! I nevertheless prefer the 1991 recording of Frieder Bernius and his Barockorchester/Kammerchor Stuttgart on Sony.
