Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Ann Douglas and her previous books

The Mother of All Pregnancy Books

"Comprehensive, informative, up-to-date, and brazenly neutral…. A must-have primer."

—The Toronto Star

"Not preachy and bossy…it’s upfront and fun." — The Toronto Star

About the Unofficial guide to Having a Baby

"Probably the best reference book on the market, giving nonjudgmental and fairly exhaustive information on [a variety of] hot-button topics…. The book lays out as much information as possible and leaves the decision-making to the parents¾ a surprisingly rare gambit in the bossy world of pregnancy books…."

—Amazon.com Parenting Editor

"Whether you are looking for the latest information on high-tech resources or down-to-earth everyday suggestions, this book has it all. There are money-saving tips and charts and checklists to help you through the pregnancy months and get you ready for the delivery; the comments are honest and often touching as Moms talk about disappointments and highs that were part of their experience. A great resource to have on hand."

—Valleykids Parent News

"Anyone who wants to become a parent may very well be overwhelmed by all the decisions to be made. Fortunately, The Unofficial Guide does a good job of explaining it all. When there is conflicting data (will it be breast or bottle?) the authors present both sides of the argument. There’s even a frank discussion about the pros and cons of having a baby, including the truth about the mommy track."

—Lisa N. Burby, Newsday

"There may be better books on individual pregnancy topics, but few can touch the excellent overview of nearly every pregnancy-related issue this book offers. It should answer all the panicky, late-night questions of most expectant couples."

— Wendy Haaf, Great Expectations

About The Official Guide to Childcare

"The childcare bible." —Chicago Tribune

"A lot of practical information…. This clearly written tome discusses working-parent stress, evaluating out-of-home and in-home childcare options, finding care for a special-needs child, breastfeeding, and part-time care."

—LA Parent

"The Unofficial Guide to Childcare explains how to do a foolproof appraisal of child care professionals, with plenty of insider secrets and time-saving tips."

—Newsday

About Baby Science

"With candid photos and a warm, conversational text, Baby Science describes the first extraordinary year of life."

—Children’s Book of the Month Club

"A clearly written, factual book aimed at young children. Peppered with interesting little facts and simple explanations about a baby’s first year, it addresses many of the questions kids have about babies."

—Peterborough Examiner

"Engagingly educational in focus, Baby Science…explains how to guess what babies are trying to say, why their bodies look the way they do, how to hold them and how much they eat and sleep."

—Publisher’s Weekly

Trying Again: A Guide to Pregnancy After Miscarriage,

Stillbirth, and Infant Loss

"The authors cover every topic (from how to cope when there’s no known medical reason for a baby’s death to how to prepare physically and emotionally for a complicated pregnancy) with expertise, candor, and compassion."

—Publisher’s Weekly

"With grace, warmth, and a touch of humor, Ann Douglas and Dr. John Sussman tackle the myths and truths about miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. Presented in a style that feels more like a chat across the kitchen table than an analytical medical discussion, their book offers practical advice balanced with accounts of loss and success of more than 100 parents."

—Preconception.com

"Trying Again extends a helping hand to couples coping with their loss and at the same time contemplating future pregnancies."

—Genessee Valley Parent

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Canadians, October 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mother of All Baby Books: An All-Canadian Guide to Baby's First Year (Paperback)
I purchased the Mother of All Pregnancy Books and the Mother of All Baby Books for the birth of my first child. I highly recommend these books. The information on practices in Canada sets them apart from other books and made my purchasing decision easy.

I have spent hours reading and re-reading these books (when you're sleep deprived it takes a while to absorb information!). The information is current and the inclusion of comments and advice from other mothers gives it credibility. The writing style flows nicely and I appreciated the touch of humour (yes there's a "u" in humour in Canada) found throughout.

Definitely buy these books if you live in Canada and are expecting a baby. You won't regret the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars So You Had A Bab-eh?, September 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mother of All Baby Books: An All-Canadian Guide to Baby's First Year (Paperback)
I bought The Mother of All Baby Books before our son was born, and found it helpful from the start. After our son arrived, I found myself checking in with Ann whenever I had questions about his health, or even my own recovery. Extremely reassuring was Douglas' more laid back approach to child development in the first year than that of the What To Expect.. series (e.g. when your child has not sat up on his or her own by 5 months, you do not need to rush to the doctor..). I highly recommend this book whether you're expecting or have just begun your journey as a parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ALL SOON TO BE MOTHERS!, March 24, 2003
By
This review is from: The Mother of All Baby Books: An All-Canadian Guide to Baby's First Year (Paperback)
This book is the only baby book you'll need to buy. It is so in depth and easy to understand. It has a lot of tables and "checklists" that are very interesting. I bought this book after I bought The Mother of All Pregnancy Books, which was awesome too. I like it so much better than the 'What to Expect' series because you can read this book straight through. After finishing this book, I wanted to buy The Mother of All Toddler Books...which is only available in the Canadian edition so far. But I think it will be available in the US soon. Do yourself a favor and buy it now!
